Does your JBL JRX212 Speaker sound off?

Is there a complete lack of those high frequencies in songs, distortion, static, or crackling noises? It could be for a variety of reasons, but with a broken tweeter, your audio may begin to sound dull due to a lack of the high frequencies that the tweeter emits.

This guide will help you through the simple steps of disconnecting your tweeter from your speaker and testing it to see if it needs replacement. A multimeter is needed to test the tweeter. For instruction on how to use a multimeter, refer to the How to Use a Multimeter guide.

Before beginning, unplug the speaker and place it on a clean, clear workspace. You will be working inside the speaker and handling internal wires.

What you need

1. Step 1 Tweeter
  Put your speaker on its side.
  
  Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the eight 25.4 mm screws from the mesh screen.

  Remove the mesh grille from the front of the speaker.
  
  Locate the rectangular horn under the grille.
  
  It's called the "horn" because it amplifies the frequencies that come from the tweeter inside.

  Remove the ten 19.1 mm Phillips #2 screws along the horn.

5. Step 4
  Carefully lift the tweeter from your speaker.
  
  The tweeter consists of two connected parts: the horn and the metal driver.
  
  Be mindful, there is a strong magnet keeping the tweeter in place. Don't be afraid to pull with some force, but don't yank the wires out from the speaker body.

  Use your hands to unscrew and separate the driver from the horn.

  The driver has two colored wires: one solid and one striped. The striped wire is attached to the NEGATIVE (-) terminal on the driver. The solid wire attaches to the POSITIVE (+) terminal.

  Gently wiggle and pull upward on each metal connector to remove both cables from their terminal.
  
  For reassembly you must reconnect these wires to their original terminal.

  Place one multimeter probe on each solder tab of the metal tweeter terminal, with one probe on each tab.
  
  Unlike the connection wires, it is not important which multimeter tester goes where.
  
  Turn your multimeter to read resistance and test the tweeter.
  
  A reading between 4-8 OHMS means functional. A reading below -0 indicates an issue, as this means nothing is being picked up by the meter.
  
  An ohm, symbol: Ω is the standard unit of electrical resistance. If your meter is like the example and has specific numbers, the ohm range 2k / 20k / 200k is best for testing general electronics. 2k works perfectly fine for this speaker.
  
  If the tweeter is no longer functional, it will need to be replaced.
