Introduction
Use this guide if a Candy washing machine leaves water in the drum, clothes come out soaking wet, or the display shows an E03 or E20 drainage error. The drainage filter, also called the coin catcher, catches coins, hair clips, hair bands, sludge, and hair before they reach the pump. This guide shows how to clean the filter and impeller area, test the machine, and check common drain pipework blockages. It was written for front-loading Candy washing machines, and other Candy models may have minor differences in the flap, hose, and pipework layout.

Step 1 Make the machine safe

Turn off the cold water feed by rotating the supply tap 90 degrees.

If you can't reach the tap, shut the cold water at the main stopcock.

If the drum still contains water, carefully open the door and remove as much water as possible with a sponge.

Step 2 Access the drainage filter

Open the small flap at the bottom left corner of the front panel.

Pull the machine out only if you need better access and can move it safely.

Lean the machine backward slightly and place a bowl under the filter if it is safe to do so.

If the machine must stay flat, lay a towel under the filter and keep a sponge ready.

Step 3 Drain water from the filter opening

Turn the filter counterclockwise slowly until water starts to drip.

Catch as much water as possible, and tighten the filter if the flow becomes too fast.

Keep loosening and tightening the filter until most of the drum water has drained.

If the filter is difficult to turn, tighten it, loosen it, and repeat to help the blockage work loose.

Pull the filter straight out once the water flow slows and most of the drum water is gone.

Step 4 Clean the drainage filter

Remove any coins, bent hair clips, hair bands, sludge, or hair from the filter.

Use a brush and hot, soapy water to scrub the filter clean.

Rinse away loosened sludge and keep the filter nearby for reinstallation.

Step 5 Check the impeller

Look into the filter opening and check that the impeller spins freely.

Remove visible coins, hair clips, hair bands, hair, or sludge from around the impeller and the back of the opening.

Use a brush to scrub the inside of the filter area.
-
Use a non-scratch sponge to wipe the inside of the filter area clean.

Step 6 Reinstall the filter and test the machine

Line up the clean filter with the opening and slide it in.

Turn the filter clockwise a few turns until it locks into place.

Close the filter flap.
-
Plug the washing machine back in and switch it on.

Turn the cold water feed back on.
-
Run a drum clean cycle or an empty 90 degrees Celsius service wash, using washing machine cleaner if available.

Check that the machine drains during the cycle.

Step 8 Check a wall standpipe hose

Pull the washing machine drainage hose out of the wall standpipe.

Check the hose end for blockages inside.
-
Clean sludge from the outside of the hose with hot, soapy water.

Use a phone in video mode with the flashlight on to record down inside the standpipe.

Review the footage and look for clear water or sludge in the pipework.

Step 9 Clean the wall standpipe U bend
-
Unscrew the U bend nuts and remove the U bend.
-
Drain the water, and put thick sludge in the bin instead of the sink.
-
Clean the U bend with hot, soapy water until it is clear.
-
Refit the U bend and tighten the nuts.

Step 10 Check an under sink connection

Disconnect the washing machine drainage hose from the under sink connector.

Check the hose and connector for blockages.
-
Clean any sludge from the hose and connector with hot, soapy water.

Refit the hose and secure the metal clip if the connection has one.

Unscrew the under sink U bend nuts if the trap needs checking.

Put sludge in the bin, clean the U bend with hot, soapy water, and reinstall it.

Step 11 Retest after cleaning the pipework

Plug the washing machine back in and switch it on if it is still unplugged.

Turn the cold water feed back on if it is still off.
-
Run a drum clean cycle or an empty 90 degrees Celsius service wash, using washing machine cleaner if available.

Check that the drum empties and the machine drains normally.

Step 12 Check remaining drainage faults

If the machine still doesn't drain, check the outside drainage if you can access it.

Make sure the outside drainage is running smoothly and is clear.

Arrange a CCTV drainage survey if you can't access or verify the outside drainage.

Call a washing machine technician for internal faults or a plumber for blocked pipework.

Step 13 Prevent smells and mold

Leave the dispenser drawer slightly ajar after each wash.

Leave the drum door slightly ajar after each wash.

Run a normal wash only after the machine drains correctly during the test cycle. If water still remains in the drum after cleaning the filter, impeller area, pipework, and outside drainage, stop troubleshooting and call a washing machine technician or plumber.
