Introduction
Use this guide to troubleshoot a Frigidaire dryer that shows an E8C error code, overheats, or takes too long to dry. E8C usually means the high-limit thermostat is tripping repeatedly because restricted airflow is trapping heat inside the dryer. This guide applies to Frigidaire dryers with this airflow-related fault, but vent routing and cabinet details may vary by model.
What you need
-
Step 1 Prepare the dryer safely
-
Stop using the dryer if it gets very hot, takes too long to dry, or shows the E8C error code.
-
Turn off the dryer, unplug it, and let it cool completely before inspecting or cleaning it.
-
Wear work gloves when reaching behind or inside the dryer because sheet-metal edges can be sharp.
-
-
Step 2 Understand the E8C error
-
Treat E8C as an overheating and airflow problem before replacing parts.
-
-
Step 3 Understand the thermostat safety system
-
Use the thermostat system as your safety reference while troubleshooting.
-
-
Step 4 Clean the lint filter
-
Pull out the lint filter and remove all lint from the screen.
-
Look into the filter slot with a flashlight for packed lint.
-
Vacuum out any loose lint you can reach safely.
-
-
Step 5 Inspect the vent behind the dryer
-
Pull the dryer away from the wall only as far as the vent and utility lines allow.
-
Inspect the vent behind the dryer for crushed, kinked, or blocked sections.
-
Straighten any kinked venting and remove visible lint from the opening.
-
-
Step 6 Check the outside vent flap
-
Go outside and find the vent hood where the dryer exhaust leaves the house.
-
Clear away lint, debris, or anything else that could stop the flap from opening.
-
Move the flap by hand to make sure it opens freely and closes again when released.
-
-
Step 7 Clean the dryer vent path
-
Clean lint from the accessible vent path and from any reachable lint buildup inside the dryer.
-
Use a vacuum to remove loose lint from areas you can reach safely.
-
Use a dryer-vent brush to loosen lint inside vent sections you can reach safely.
-
-
Step 8 Test airflow and heat
-
Reconnect the vent, restore power, and turn the gas supply back on if the dryer uses gas.
-
Run a short heated cycle and check the outside vent hood.
-
Confirm that air is flowing out and that the outside flap opens while the dryer runs.
-
-
Step 9 Avoid unsafe thermostat shortcuts
-
If E8C returns after the lint filter, venting, outside flap, and dryer interior are clean, stop using the dryer until the thermostat circuit is diagnosed.
-
Run the dryer only after the lint filter, venting, outside flap, and inside lint buildup are clear. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
