Introduction
If your HP EliteBook 840 G4 won’t boot, crashes a lot, or shows hardware errors, the motherboard could be the problem. The motherboard connects all parts of your laptop, and without it, the laptop won’t work.
To check, remove the bottom cover, disconnect the battery and other removable parts, then try powering on with AC only. If it still doesn’t work, the motherboard likely needs replacing.
Dispose of the old motherboard properly.
What you need

Remove the ten 2 mm screws securing the back panel using a Phillips #0 screwdriver.

Pry open the sides using an opening tool until you hear clicks.

Pop off the back panel and place it to the side.

Remove the 17 4 mm screws from the midframe using a Phillips 0 screwdriver.

Disconnect the two wires from the Wi-Fi card.

Flip up the midframe.

Remove the fifteen 1 mm screws from the motherboard using a Phillips #0 screwdriver.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
