Introduction

If your HP Elite x2 G4 is experiencing poor battery life, failing to hold a charge, or shutting down unexpectedly, this guide will walk you through replacing the internal battery.

The battery supplies power to the device when it is not connected to an external source. Over time, batteries naturally degrade, leading to shorter usage times, inconsistent performance, or failure to charge properly. Replacing a worn-out battery can restore your device’s portability and reliability.

Before beginning this guide, rule out simpler issues. Make sure your charging cable and adapter are functioning correctly, and check the charging port for dust or debris that could interfere with the connection. Restarting the device or updating system software may also help resolve minor battery-related problems.

Before starting, power off your device completely and disconnect it from any external power source.

Open the kickstand.
Use a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the four 3.0 mm screws along the bottom edge of the back of the display assembly.

Use a suction cup and opening pick to carefully detach the screen from the display assembly in the following order: top-right, top-left, bottom-right, and bottom-left corners.
Slide an opening pick around the seam between the screen and back case to release the retaining clips.
Leave an opening pick in the space along the perimeter to keep the screen reattaching.
Use the suction cup to separate the screen.

When lifting the display panel, make sure not to lift it too high, since you'll run the risk of tearing the cables, or damaging the connectors on the board.
Slowly lift the display panel until you have access to the battery connector on the motherboard.
Use a spudger or a clean fingernail to flip up the black locking flap on the ZIF connector to release the display cable from the motherboard.
Use the widest tool possible to avoid damaging the delicate hinge pins.
Use tweezers to gently pull the display cable out of its socket.
Flip the locking flap up on the touchscreen cable connector and remove the ribbon cable from the board.
Remove the screen from the device.

Use the point of a spudger to push on alternating sides of the battery connector to "walk" it out of its socket on the motherboard.
It may take a lot of alternating before the connector comes out. Be patient, and don't pull on the cables.

Remove the six 3.5 mm Phillips #1 screws that secure the battery to the display enclosure.

Carefully lift the top edge of the battery off of the alignment pins.
Slide the bottom edge out from retention tabs on the display enclosure and remove the battery.
