Introduction

If your Garmin DriveSmart 71 EX won’t power on or fails to hold a charge, a worn-out or disconnected battery may be the cause. This guide walks you through opening the device and replacing the internal battery. Handle the internal connectors and cables with care to prevent damage to the components during the repair process.

Unplug and power off the device.

Remove the four 5 mm T5 Torx screws securing the rear case.

Insert an opening pick into the seam between the front and back cover.
Carefully slide the opening pick around the perimeter of the device to release the clips securing the front and rear case.
Open the case with care not to strain the display ribbon cable or the microphone cable.
You may hear small snapping sounds as the clips release. Don't worry, this is normal.

Use tweezers to disconnect the white battery cable connector from its motherboard socket.
Tweezers are optional. Do not use too much force to remove the wires if you are using your hands.

Use a plastic spudger to lift and remove the battery from the back cover.
Do not pull on the wires to remove the battery from the device. Take care not to bend, puncture, or twist the battery.
