Introduction
Use this guide to replace a broken belt in a Frigidaire front-load dryer. The dryer belt, also called the drive belt or drum belt, wraps around the drum and motor pulley so the drum can turn. Replace the belt if the dryer sounds like it is running but the drum does not move. This guide was written on a Frigidaire front-load dryer, but panel screws and clip locations may vary by model.
What you need
-
Step 1 Check the belt symptom
-
Leave every panel installed during any powered check.
-
Set the timer and press Start only long enough to see whether the drum turns.
-
Unplug the dryer before removing any panel.
-
Let the dryer cool before touching internal parts.
-
-
Step 2 Inspect the belt through the rear access panel
-
Remove the two screws securing the small rear access panel.
-
Remove the access panel and look toward the idler pulley and motor pulley.
-
If no belt is attached to the pulleys, the belt is broken.
-
-
Step 3 Remove the top panel
-
Remove the two screws at the back of the top panel.
-
Slide the top panel toward the rear of the dryer.
-
Lift the top panel off and set it aside.
-
-
Step 4 Remove the lower front panel
-
Tilt the dryer back enough to reach the screws under the lower front panel.
-
Remove the two screws from the underside of the lower front panel.
-
Pull the bottom of the lower front panel outward until the two pins release.
-
Remove the two screws exposed behind the lower front panel.
-
Set the dryer upright again.
-

-
Use a flathead screwdriver to release the spring clips along the sides of the front panel.
-
Pull the front panel away from the side panels.
-
Lift the front panel off the top hooks and set it aside.
-
-
Step 7 Remove the drum and clean inside
-
Lift the back of the drum so the rear ball comes out of its socket.
-
Pull the drum forward and out of the cabinet.
-
Clean dust and lint out of the cabinet while the drum is removed.
-
-
Step 8 Reinstall the drum and position the belt
-
Guide the drum back into the cabinet with the rear ball held high.
-
Lower the drum until the rear ball drops into its socket.
-
Slip the new belt around the drum.
-
Position the belt on the old wear marks if they are visible.
-
Let the lower loop of the belt hang near the idler pulley.
-
-
Step 9 Route the belt on the pulleys
-
Route the belt over the top of the idler pulley.
-
Pull the idler pulley to the right.
-
Route the belt under the motor pulley.
-
Spin the drum by hand to confirm the belt tracks correctly.
-
-
Step 10 Reinstall the front panel
-
Set the front-panel hooks into the slots at the top of the cabinet.
-
Hold the front panel slightly away from the cabinet while you lift the drum onto the front felt seal.
-
Press the front panel toward the side panels until the spring clips snap in.
-
Spin the drum by hand to confirm it turns freely.
-
-
Step 11 Reconnect the wiring and top screws
-
Reconnect the control-panel, door-switch, and light connectors.
-
Reinstall the four top screws you removed.
-
Make sure the top screws seat fully.
-
-
Step 12 Reinstall the side screws and rear panels
-
Reinstall the two rear-facing screws that secure the front panel to the side panels.
-
Set the top panel about 3/4 inch to 1 inch behind its final position.
-
Slide the top panel forward until it locks in place.
-
Reinstall the two screws at the back of the top panel.
-
Fit the right edge of the rear access panel into its slots.
-
Swing the panel closed and reinstall its two screws.
-
-
Step 13 Reinstall the lower front panel
-
Reinstall the two screws exposed behind the lower front panel.
-
Insert the two white pins on the lower front panel into the bottom of the main front panel.
-
Reinstall the two screws under the lower front panel.
-
Set the dryer back down if it is still tilted.
-
-
Step 14 Test the repair
-
Confirm that every panel is installed and every screw is secure.
-
Plug the dryer back in.
-
Set the timer, press Start, and run the dryer briefly.
-
Confirm that the drum spins smoothly.
