Introduction
Use this guide to replace the battery in a Dyson V8 SV10 cordless vacuum. The battery, also called the battery pack or battery unit, powers the vacuum’s motor. Replace it if the vacuum won’t turn on, won’t hold a charge, or has poor battery life. This procedure also applies to V8 variants such as the V8 Animal and V8 Fluffy when they use the same SV10 battery style. Check warranty coverage before installing a replacement.

Step 1 Prepare the vacuum and work area

Turn off the Dyson V8 and disconnect it from the charger before handling the battery.

Let the battery cool if the vacuum was just used or charged.

Work over a pad to catch dust that may fall from the bin during the repair.

Step 2 Identify the battery

Confirm the vacuum is a Dyson V8 body with a red bin-release lever, a pinch-pull top filter, and a rotating rear filter.

Check the bottom label near the battery for the SV10 marking.

Record the SV10 marking and the first three serial characters, such as A1Y on the example unit.

Use these markings to verify the replacement battery before installing it.

Step 3 Remove the clear bin

Pull up the red bin-release lever to open the bottom bin door and empty the debris.

Press the small lever on the bottom of the clear bin.
-
Slide the clear bin down and off the bottom of the vacuum.
-
Snap the release mechanism back down while you work if it is in the way.

Step 4 Remove and organize the screws

Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw at the back of the handle.

Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two Phillips screws exposed at the base of the battery.

Reuse the original screws if they are in good condition.

Step 5 Remove the original battery

Support the vacuum body with one hand and pull the battery out of the handle.

Step 6 Compare the batteries

Place the original battery and the replacement battery side by side.

Confirm the mounting hole, switch button, screw holes, and electrical connection areas line up.

Step 7 Install and test the replacement battery

Slide the replacement battery into the handle until it snaps into place.

Step 8 Reinstall the battery screws

Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the two base screws in their original positions.

Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the handle screw with its rubber washer gasket.

Tighten the screws until they are snug, but don't overtighten them into the plastic.

Step 9 Reinstall the clear bin

Pull the red bin-release lever up to create more room.
-
Leave the bottom bin door open while aligning the clear bin.

Fit the small connection points into the upper area and line up the inner clips.

Set the bottom of the clear bin into its track and slide the bin upward.
-
Continue sliding until the small red clip latches into place.
-
Push the red bin-release lever down and snap the bottom bin door closed.

If the bin doesn’t slide smoothly, don’t force it. Realign the clips and try again.

Step 10 Label the replacement battery

Use a permanent marker to copy the SV10 marking and the first three serial characters from the original battery onto the bottom of the replacement battery.

Write the installation date on the replacement battery.

If the replacement battery has no brand name on its label, write the brand or seller name it was sold under.

Step 11 Test and clean up

Press the trigger to confirm the vacuum runs with the battery secured and the bin installed.

If the vacuum doesn't run, reseat the battery and confirm the replacement matches the SV10 layout.

Take the old lithium-ion battery to household hazardous waste collection or a battery recycler.

After installing a new battery, charge it to 100%, and keep charging it for at least two more hours. Use the vacuum until it shuts off because of a low battery, then charge it uninterrupted to 100%.
