Introduction

Use this guide to replace the battery module in a Dyson V6 SV04 vacuum. The battery module, also called the battery pack or battery assembly, powers the vacuum and contains the charging circuitry and trigger switch. Replace it if the vacuum flashes red on the charger or won't hold a charge. This procedure replaces the complete module, not the individual 18650 cells inside the pack.

1. Step 1 Identify the failed battery and prepare safely

  Release the trigger and keep the vacuum switched off while you work.
  
  Replace the battery module if the battery flashes red while on the charger or the vacuum won't hold a charge.
  
  Don't charge or use a swollen, leaking, hot, or damaged lithium-ion battery, and don't let metal tools bridge the battery contacts.

2. Step 2 Remove the dust bin

  Empty the dust bin so loose debris doesn't spill during removal.
  
  Press the bin-release latch down to open the dust bin.
  
  Hold the latch down farther to release the bin from the vacuum body.
  
  Wiggle the bin until the peg slides out of its slot.
  
  Remove the bin to expose the lower battery screw.

3. Step 3 Remove the battery screws

  Find the two Phillips screws holding the battery module.
  
  One screw is in the lower recess exposed by the dust bin, and the other is farther back near the handle.
  
  Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two battery screws.
  
  Keep the screws organized for reassembly.

4. Step 4 Detach the battery module

  Support the vacuum body with one hand.
  
  Pull the battery module straight down and out through the bottom of the handle.
  
  Don't twist the module or pull the trigger while removing it.

5. Step 5 Choose a replacement module

  Buy a direct-plug-in Dyson V6 SV04 battery module, not loose cells, for this replacement.
  
  The complete module contains the cells, charging circuitry, low-battery shutoff electronics, and on/off switch.
  
  Rebuilding the pack means opening the module and replacing individual 18650 cells.
  
  Don't open, puncture, or short a lithium-ion battery pack unless you're trained for cell-level battery repair.

6. Step 6 Install the replacement battery module

  Align the replacement battery module with the bottom of the handle.
  
  Press the module into the handle until it snaps in.
  
  Keep the trigger released and keep hands clear of the nozzle because the vacuum may run when the module seats.
  
  The vacuum trigger presses a switch built into the battery module.

7. Step 7 Secure the battery module

  Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the two battery screws.
  
  Install the screw in the lower recess exposed by the bin opening.
  
  Install the screw farther back near the handle.
  
  Tighten the screws until snug, but don't overtighten them.

8. Step 8 Reinstall the dust bin

  Align the dust bin peg with its slot on the vacuum body.
  
  Slide the peg into the slot and snap the bin into place.
  
  Close the dust bin.
  
  Make sure the bin is latched before using the vacuum.
  
  Press the trigger briefly to confirm the vacuum runs.

Conclusion

After installing a new battery, charge it to 100%, and keep charging it for at least two more hours. Use the vacuum until it shuts off because of a low battery, then charge it uninterrupted to 100%.

The replacement battery module should now be secured and the dust bin latched. Recycle the old lithium-ion battery through a battery recycler or household hazardous waste program.
