Introduction

Use this guide to remove, wash, dry, and reinstall the post-filter in a Dyson V10 vacuum. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and reduce suction. Wash the filter monthly, or more often after vacuuming fine dust or using high-power modes frequently. The filter must be completely dry before reinstallation.

1. Step 1 Prepare the vacuum

  Turn off the vacuum and disconnect it from the charger before handling the filter.
  
  Keep water away from the vacuum body, motor area, battery, and charging contacts.
  
  This guide applies to Dyson V10 Absolute, Animal, Motorhead, and other V10 variants with this rear post-filter.
  
  Do not run or charge the vacuum while the filter is removed or wet.

2. Step 2 Locate the post-filter

  Hold the vacuum with the rear of the motor body facing you.
  
  Locate the purple post-filter on the back of the vacuum.
  
  The V10 uses one rear post-filter rather than a filter in the top of the cyclone assembly.

3. Step 3 Remove the post-filter

  Grip the purple filter housing and twist it counterclockwise to the open position.
  
  The housing turns only a short distance, so don't force it past the stop.
  
  Pull the filter straight off the rear of the vacuum.
  
  Set the vacuum body aside in a dry place before washing the filter.

4. Step 4 Inspect the filter unit

  Keep the filter unit assembled and gently tap it over a trash bin to remove loose dust and debris.
  
  Do not pry the filter media out of the purple housing; the unit isn't designed to come apart.
  
  Check the plastic ribs, filter media, housing, and rubber seal for damage.
  
  Replace the filter if it is torn, cracked, deformed, or cleaning no longer restores performance.

5. Step 5 Wash the inside of the filter

  Hold the filter upright under cold running water and rotate it to wash the inside.
  
  Continue rinsing until the water runs clear.
  
  Do not use warm or hot water, detergent, solvents, a dishwasher, or a washing machine.
  
  Keep the vacuum body away from the sink while washing the filter.

6. Step 6 Wash the outside of the filter

  Wash the outside of the filter with cold water.
  
  Fill the filter with cold water, cover the open end with your hand, and shake it gently.
  
  Repeat the inside and outside rinses until the water runs clear.
  
  Gently tap or shake the filter to remove excess water.

7. Step 7 Air dry the filter

  Place the filter with its open end facing up in a clean area with good airflow for at least 24 hours.
  
  Reinstall the filter only when every part is completely dry.
  
  Do not use a hair dryer, tumble dryer, oven, heater, or open flame to speed drying.
  
  If the filter still feels damp after 24 hours, let it dry longer.

8. Step 8 Refit the post-filter

  Align the filter on the rear of the vacuum with the Dyson label at the top.
  
  Push the filter firmly onto the back of the vacuum.
  
  Twist the purple housing clockwise until it stops and clicks into place.
  
  The housing may feel stiff as the rubber seal compresses.

9. Step 9 Check the seal

  Check that the filter housing sits evenly against the rear of the vacuum.
  
  Pull gently on the filter to confirm it doesn't loosen.
  
  Remove and refit the filter if it doesn't click, sits crooked, or shows gaps around the seal.
  
  Do not use the vacuum until the filter is completely dry, locked, and sealed.
