Introduction

Use this guide to replace the battery pack, battery, or power pack in a Dyson DC44 cordless vacuum. A worn battery can cause the vacuum to do nothing when you pull the trigger, and the green charge light may stop coming on. This guide is written for the Dyson DC44, but similar Dyson DC31, DC34, and DC45 models may have minor differences.

  The battery is likely dead if nothing happens and the green charge light no longer comes on.
  
  A dead battery is the most common cause of this symptom on the DC44.

2. Step 2 Prepare the vacuum

  Unplug the charger from the vacuum and the wall outlet.
  
  Don't work on the vacuum while it's connected to the charger.
  
  Press the top release lever to pop the vacuum open.
  
  Separate the vacuum into two sections.

3. Step 3 Remove the filter

  Pull the air filter straight out of the front of the vacuum.
  
  If you wash the filter, let it dry completely before reinstalling it.

4. Step 4 Remove the battery screws

  Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the front screw inside the filter opening.
  
  Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the rear screw at the back of the battery.
  
  Set both screws aside and keep track of their locations.
  
  The longer screw belongs in the rear position during reassembly.

5. Step 5 Remove the old battery

  Slide the battery down and out through the bottom of the vacuum.
  
  Do not pry against, crush, puncture, or short the battery pack.
  
  Remove the old battery before ordering a replacement so you can match the correct style.

6. Step 6 Identify the battery style

  Inspect the top of the removed battery.
  
  Choose a Type B battery if the old battery has a tab on top.
  
  Choose an Type A battery if the old battery has no top tab.
  
  Order the matching replacement battery before installing it.

7. Step 7 Install the new battery

  Insert the matching new battery up through the bottom of the vacuum.
  
  Push the battery fully into place so the screw holes line up.
  
  Place the longer screw in the rear hole.
  
  Use the Phillips screwdriver to tighten the rear screw.

8. Step 8 Install the front screw

  Place the front screw into the screw hole inside the filter opening.
  
  Use needle nose pliers to hold and guide the screw if it's hard to reach.
  
  Use the Phillips screwdriver to seat and tighten the front screw.
  
  If the screw won't start, back it out and realign the battery until the hole lines up.

9. Step 9 Reinstall the filter

  Reinstall the air filter in the front of the vacuum.
  
  Use the small top tab as an orientation mark.
  
  Seat the filter flush in its opening.

10. Step 10 Reassemble and test the vacuum

  Join the two vacuum sections together.
  
  Engage the lower end first, press the top into place, and listen for a click.
  
  Pull the trigger to test the vacuum.
  
  If the vacuum doesn't run, check that the battery style matches the old battery and both screws are seated.

11. Step 11 Handle the old battery safely

  Keep the old battery pack intact after removal.
  
  Do not cut the wires or open the casing; the cells and circuit board inside are soldered together.
  
  Recycle the old battery through an approved battery recycling program.

Conclusion

After installing a new battery, charge it to 100%, and keep charging it for at least two more hours. Use the vacuum until it shuts off because of a low battery, then charge it uninterrupted to 100%.
