Introduction

Use this guide to replace the battery in a Dyson DC34 cordless vacuum. A failed battery pack, rechargeable battery, or vacuum battery can cause the vacuum to do nothing when you pull the trigger, and the green charge light may stop turning on. The DC34 can use different battery styles, so remove the old battery and compare it before ordering a replacement.

2. Step 2 Separate the vacuum body

  Press the top release lever to pop the vacuum open.
  
  Separate the vacuum into two pieces.
  
  Remove the air filter from the front of the vacuum.
  
  Wash the air filter occasionally as part of regular maintenance, and let it dry fully before reinstalling it.

3. Step 3 Remove the old battery

  Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw near the filter opening.
  
  Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw at the back of the battery area.
  
  Keep the screws separated because the longer screw goes in the back during reassembly.
  
  Slide the old battery out of the bottom of the vacuum.

4. Step 4 Match the battery style

  Compare the old battery before ordering a replacement battery.
  
  Choose a Type B battery if the old battery has a tab on top.
  
  Choose an Type A battery if the old battery has no tab on top.
  
  Search parts sellers or online marketplaces for a compatible Dyson DC34 battery that matches the old battery style.

5. Step 5 Install the replacement battery

  Slide the replacement battery up through the bottom of the vacuum.
  
  Use a Phillips screwdriver to install the longer screw in the back screw hole.
  
  Tighten the screw until it is secure, but don't overtighten it.

6. Step 6 Install the front screw

  Place the front screw into the screw hole near the filter opening.
  
  Use needle nose pliers to hold the screw and line it up if it's hard to start.
  
  Use a Phillips screwdriver to seat and tighten the front screw.

7. Step 7 Reinstall the filter and close the vacuum

  Reinstall the air filter in the front of the vacuum.
  
  Use the small tab on top of the filter to orient it correctly.
  
  Fit the two vacuum pieces back together.
  
  Press the top closed until it clicks.
  
  Pull the trigger to confirm the vacuum works.

8. Step 8 Troubleshoot common issues

  If the replacement battery doesn't fit, remove it and compare the top tab with the old battery.
  
  If the front screw won't start, hold it with needle nose pliers until it sits in the hole.
  
  If the vacuum doesn't close, remove and reinstall the filter with its tab facing up.
  
  If the vacuum still doesn't run after a matching battery is installed, the battery may not be the only fault.
  
  Don't cut open or repair the old battery pack because the cells and circuit board are soldered together inside.

Conclusion

After installing a new battery, charge it to 100%, and keep charging it for at least two more hours. Use the vacuum until it shuts off because of a low battery, then charge it uninterrupted to 100%.
