Introduction

Use this guide to replace a dead battery in a Dyson DC31 cordless vacuum. The battery pack powers the vacuum motor and can cause symptoms like no response from the trigger or no green charging light. Dyson cordless models can use either an A style battery or a B style battery, so remove and inspect the old battery before buying a replacement. This procedure is specific to the DC31 and is similar to the DC34, DC44, and DC45, though small model differences may exist.

  Work on a clean, dry surface away from liquids, heat, and loose metal objects.
  
  Do not puncture, crush, open, or short the battery pack; replace it as a complete battery pack.
  
  A dead battery is a common cause when the trigger does nothing or the green charge light no longer comes on.

2. Step 2 Separate the vacuum body

  Pull the vacuum into two pieces to expose the battery mounting area.

3. Step 3 Remove the filter and battery screws

  Pull the air filter out of the front opening.
  
  If you wash the filter, let it dry completely before reinstalling it.
  
  Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the front battery screw.
  
  Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the rear battery screw.
  
  Keep track of the rear screw, because the longer screw goes in the back during reassembly.

4. Step 4 Remove and identify the old battery

  Inspect the top of the old battery before ordering a replacement.
  
  Choose a Type B battery if the old battery has a tab on top.
  
  Choose an Type A battery if the old battery has no tab on top.

5. Step 5 Select the replacement battery

  Buy a replacement battery that matches the A style or Type B battery removed from the vacuum.
  
  Compare the new battery with the old battery before installation, especially the top tab shape.
  
  Do not rely only on the vacuum model name when ordering, because compatible models can use different battery styles.

6. Step 6 Install the new battery

  Insert the replacement battery up through the bottom of the handle.
  
  Align the battery so the screw holes line up with the handle.
  
  Use a Phillips screwdriver to install the longer screw in the rear battery hole and tighten it.
  
  Use needle nose pliers to position the front screw in the front hole if it is hard to start.
  
  Use a Phillips screwdriver to seat and tighten the front screw.

7. Step 7 Reinstall the filter and reassemble the vacuum

  Join the two vacuum sections by placing the lower side first.
  
  Press the top of the sections together until they click into place.
  
  Press the trigger to confirm the vacuum runs again.

8. Step 8 Recycle the old battery

  Recycle the old battery pack through an approved battery recycling program.
  
  Do not cut the wires or disassemble the old battery pack.
  
  The internal cells and circuit board are soldered together and aren't part of this replacement procedure.

Conclusion

After installing a new battery, charge it to 100%, and keep charging it for at least two more hours. Use the vacuum until it shuts off because of a low battery, then charge it uninterrupted to 100%.
