Video Guide
This guide was transcribed from a YouTube video.

What you need

    • Switch off the dishwasher at the mains and unplug it before touching the filter area or hoses.

    • Keep the plug, outlet, and floor dry while you work.

    • Wear waterproof gloves while handling dirty water and food debris.

    • Remove the lower basket to access the base of the dishwasher.

    • Prepare hot soapy water for cleaning the removed parts.

    • Let the water cool enough to touch before cleaning parts by hand.

    • Place a bucket next to the open dishwasher to catch dirty water.

    • Use a large sponge to soak up standing water from the tub.

    • Squeeze the sponge into the bucket and repeat until the base is mostly dry.

    • Use a tray instead of a bucket if it fits better beside the dishwasher.

    • Remove as much water as possible before lifting out the filter.

    • Lift the lower spray arm straight up until it unclips.

    • Set the spray arm aside for cleaning.

    • Turn the filter counterclockwise gently.

    • Lift the filter out of the sump.

    • The filter may feel stiff if debris is packed around it.

    • Lift out the mesh cover under the filter and turn it over.

    • Inspect both sides for food, fat, and other debris.

    • Use the large sponge to remove standing water from the filter area.

    • Debris in this area can stop the dishwasher from draining.

    • Remove all food, fat, and loose items from the bottom of the filter area.

    • Look for small objects, such as rubber feet from pan supports, that could block the drain impeller.

    • Use a wet and dry vacuum cleaner, a turkey baster, the large sponge, or a brush to remove the last water and debris.

    • Use the brush to clean around the impeller opening.

    • Keep fingers out of the impeller area and don't force anything into it.

    • Keep cleaning until the filter area is clean and free of debris.

    • Pull the inner filter out of the outer filter.

    • Wash the filter gauze with hot soapy water.

    • Wash the mesh cover with hot soapy water.

    • Use the brush or large sponge to loosen stuck debris.

    • Pour water into the lower spray arm and tip it both ways.

    • Keep rinsing the spray arm until water flows through it and the holes aren't blocked.

    • Set the mesh cover back over the filter opening.

    • Push the inner filter into the outer filter until the lugs clip into place.

    • Lower the filter into the opening.

    • Turn the filter clockwise about 45 degrees until it locks.

    • Check that the arrows line up and the filter feels secure.

    • Push the lower spray arm down until it clips in.

    • Confirm the inner filter hasn't worked loose before reinstalling the basket.

    • Place the lower basket back in the dishwasher.

    • Plug the dishwasher back in and switch it on.

    • Peel the sticker from the top of the dishwasher cleaner lid.

    • Don't remove the cleaner lid, and follow the cleaner label to avoid chemical contact.

    • Lay the cleaner face down in one of the plate trays.

    • Push the basket in and select the hottest dishwasher program available.

    • On the example Beko dishwasher, the hottest cycle is Intensive 65 °C.

    • Let the cycle finish to keep the dishwasher fresh and help clear small blockages.

    • Watch the drain outlet outside the property during the cleaning cycle if you can access it safely.

    • Confirm water flows from the dishwasher drain outlet.

    • Open the dishwasher when the cleaning cycle ends and check for standing water.

    • A clean, draining dishwasher should have no standing water and should smell fresh.

    • If water remains, keep the dishwasher switched off and check the drain hose and pipework.

    • Switch off the dishwasher at the mains and unplug it again.

    • Pull the dishwasher out far enough to reach the back.

    • Wiggle it left and right while pulling to move it gently.

    • Don't pull it out quickly, because the cold water inlet feed and drainage hose are still connected.

    • Stop if the dishwasher is built in, trapped, or hard to move safely.

    • Call a dishwasher technician if you can't access the back without straining hoses or cables.

    • Find the drainage hose running from the back of the dishwasher to the drainage pipework.

    • Keep the hose high and pull the end out of the drainage pipework.

    • Hold a bucket or tray under the hose before lowering it.

    • Dirty water may flow out as soon as the hose is lowered.

    • Look inside the hose end for blockages and remove any debris.

    • Clean the hose end and connection with a hot soapy sponge.

    • Refit the hose securely after it is clear.

    • Look down the drainage pipework where the hose was connected.

    • Use a phone with the LED light on to record inside the pipe if you can't see into it.

    • Clear any blockage you find before reconnecting the hose.

    • Call a dishwasher technician if you can't clear the blockage.

    • Clear water at the bottom of the pipe is a good sign that the pipework isn't blocked.

    • Place a bucket or tray under the U-bend if the dishwasher drain has one.

    • Unscrew the U-bend if the threaded joint turns freely.

    • Don't force the joint if it appears glued or stuck, because the pipework can crack or leak.

    • Remove food, debris, and blockages from the U-bend.

    • Rinse the U-bend and reinstall it securely.

    • The U-bend catches debris so the rest of the drain is easier to clean.

    • Look under the sink if the dishwasher drains into the sink pipework.

    • Find the sink U-bend at the bottom of the pipe.

    • Remove the U-bend if it is accessible and not glued.

    • Check for debris and blockages.

    • Clean the U-bend and reinstall it securely.

    • Make sure all connections are secure before using the dishwasher.

    • Reconnect the drainage hose to the drainage pipework.

    • Slide the dishwasher gently back into place.

    • Make sure the drainage hose and cold water inlet feed don't kink behind the dishwasher.

    • Plug the dishwasher in and switch it on only after the area is dry.

    • Check the dishwasher for normal draining during the next wash.

    • Stop troubleshooting if the dishwasher still doesn't drain after the filter, hose, and pipework are clear.

    • The drain pump may have failed.

    • Call a dishwasher technician if you're not confident replacing the pump.

    • Call for help if electrical parts get wet, the dishwasher trips the power, or you find damaged wiring.
