8BitDo Pro 2 D-Pad Replacement

Introduction

Go to step 1 ↓

If your 8BitDo Pro 2 controller D-Pad is unresponsive or not registering inputs correctly, the D-Pad may need to be replaced. This guide will walk you through removing and installing the D-Pad on your controller.

The D-Pad is responsible for directional movement and input control during gameplay. Over time, wear and tear can affect the performance and responsiveness.

Before using this guide, try cleaning around the D-Pad to ensure proper function. You should also test the controller on different devices to ensure it is in the correct input see the troubleshooting page for more information.

This guide will require you to open the controller. Before beginning, make sure to power the controller off.

      • Insert the iFixit pick into the seam along the edge of the controller and slide it around to release the clips holding it together.

      • Leave opening picks in the space to keep the top and bottom case from reattaching.

      • Use an iFixit tool to carefully pry around the edges of the controller.

      • Once loosened, gently separate the top and bottom of the controller.

      • Do not separate the top and bottom sections, as they are still connected by a ribbon cable.

      • Use a spudger to gently push up on alternating sides of the black plastic tab until it clicks up into its unlocked position.

      • Don't push the tab too hard or too far, otherwise it may come completely off the connector.

      • Use tweezers to gently pull the cable out of its socket.

      • The cable should be able to slide in and out of the socket with little to no force. If you feel resistance, the tab may not be fully unlocked.

      • During reassembly, insert the cable into its socket and use the flat end of a spudger to push the tab down into its locked position.

      • Separate the top and bottom casing of the controller.

      • If you feel resistance, check for any cables still connecting the two halves and avoid forcing them apart.
