Background and Identification

Initially released in 1991 by Thermo Electron Corporation, the Viasys 3100A is a high-frequency oscillatory ventilator, or HFOV. As one of the members of the 3100 Series, this HFOV is identified by its part number, 33437-001, as opposed to the 3100B, whose part number is 33438-001, which can be found on the back of the device. You can identify this device by noticing three parts from top to bottom; the top has several display screens and knobs, the middle has a circular compartment with a tube extending outwards from it, and the bottom mainly consists of the base/stand.

Viasys Healthcare was incorporated in 2001, as a spinoff of Thermo Electron Corporation and a conglomeration of biomedical companies that Thermo Electron Corporation had bought out over the years. Once incorporated, Viasys controlled the 3100 Series of ventilators.

The Viasys 3100A HFOV safely operates by inflating a patient’s lung with continuous swelling pressure while also implementing small changes in volume and pressure to achieve necessary ventilation. It is the only US-approved HFOV for early intervention in the treatment of neonatal respiratory failure. This device also helps with the treatment of acute respiratory stress syndrome (ARDS).
