Background and Identification

Smoke evacuation systems in medicine refer to devices used in tandem with heat/high-intensity light-based surgical equipment to remove the smoke generated from these devices during use in surgery. These devices are typically connected to electrosurgical generators, and use a series of tubes to remove any electrosurgical smoke or laser plume at the source. They can either be used by an independent profession to explicitly remove smoke, or can be combined with the surgical instrument through use of a ‘pencil’ to allow a single surgeon to both cut/laze/coagulate and remove smoke simultaneously.
