Background and Identification

A peripheral nerve block is a type of procedure that involves the injection of an anesthetic near a major nerve or nerve bundle in order to provide pain relief. Because the effects of peripheral nerve blocks typically last longer than local anesthesia, they are most often used during surgeries involving the limbs (hands, arms, and legs). Peripheral nerve blocks are also used for surgeries involving the face, where the introduction of a local anesthetic may cause distortions that complicate the surgery.
