Introduction
After the inital excitement around the Thinkpad Helix devices, Lenovo decided to use what they had learned from these devices and turn them into a full-fledged Surface competitor. Released around September of 2016, the Thinkpad X1 Tablet (Gen 1) was the first detachable laptop released under the Thinkpad line. It released with much fanfare, reviewers praising its portabilty and performance at the time. The inclusion of the keyboard in the device was praised as a value add. However, the fact that this device was priced at around $1,100 for the m3 model did make it more expensive than the comparable Surface Pro 4.
Modularity
Lenovo had built the device with external modules in mind. These would be added to the bottom of the device to improve functionality. A Onelink+ cover was included in the box to allow for the keyboard to be attached when no Onelink+ devices were connected. The 3 Modules that were avaliable at the time included the productivity module, 3D camera, and even pico projector! These were innovative options that could be added on, however reviewers did question the direct utility of the projector and camera modules. The productivity Module, which included an extended battery and more ports, along with the option to add the keyboard right below it, made the most sense to reviewers at the time. However, with accessories starting at $150 for the productivity module, and the more expensive pico projector at $300, it was questioned whether or not the modules were even worth the price to add to an already expensive machine!
