Introduction
With the successful redesign of the Thinkpad X1 Tablet (Gen 3), Lenovo was looking for a device that can better compete in the Surface-Like (now referred to a detachable) market. Taking into consideration the challenges of moving to an all-new design for the last version of the X1 Tablet, Lenovo looked to overhaul the line to better fit their version of a detachable laptop. Released around three years after the Thinkpad X1 Tablet (Gen 3), it set a new course for the new line of detachable laptops in Lenovo’s lineup. The release had a positive reception, with reviewers praising the more compact design, better battery life, and inclusion of a pen and keyboard in the purchase price. The performance was a bit to be desired as some reviewers found the performance to drop off slightly when compared to the Surface Pro 7 Plus, but the overall reception was positive.
Old Model; New Improvements
The problems that were introduced with the Thinkpad X1 Tablet redesign were noticeable. Users complained about how large the device was in comparison to the previous versions, along with its issue of running hot and loud under load. Despite not changing the core design of the laptop, the Thinkpad X12 (Gen 1) made some welcome improvements to the formula. Opting for a much smaller frame, allowed for the device to fit in more bags and reduced the overall weight. However, due to the change over to the more efficient 11th gen Core Architecture, the system lasts longer on battery despite having the same sized battery as the X1 Tablet. Minor changes to the keyboard were also made to make it feel more stiff, which is a complaint with other detachable type keyboards. Pen support was also a wecome addition, adding more functionality out of the box when compared to the Surface Pro. Despite its overall positive reception, Reviewers did notice some perfomance inconsistencies, with some reporting that despite having overall better graphics and processors when compared to the Surface Pro 7 Plus, the device would often times beat the Thinkpad X12 in both graphics and CPU specific tasks.
