Background and Identification
Laparoscopy is a surgical technique, primarily used on the abdomen and pelvis, that utilizes small incisions and the insertion of a camera to observe the internal organs for diagnostic purposes. A laparoscope is a specialized instrument that includes either a telescopic lens or a small digital camera as well as a source of light to aid observation.
Laparoscopy is used when other imaging technologies, such as MRI, CT, or ulstrasound, fail to aid in diagnosis. Laparoscopes can be used to observe the condition of the following organs: stomache, gall bladder, pancreas, liver, large and small intestine, spleen, and the reproductive organs.
