Background
Kyocera launched the DuraXE Epic on April 16, 2021, on the AT&T 4G LTE network. The phone was an upgrade to the original DuraXE (model E4710), adding a faster processor, more memory, a bigger battery, USB-C charging, and support for AT&T's FirstNet network, which is a special network built for police, firefighters, and other first responders.
The DuraXE Epic is not a full smartphone. It runs on AOSP 10 (a basic version of Android 10) but uses a regular keypad with buttons instead of a touchscreen. You move through menus using the arrow keys. Even though it looks and feels like a simple flip phone, it can do some modern things like connect to fast 4G LTE internet, make clearer phone calls using HD Voice, work as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 10 other devices, and use AT&T's walkie-talkie-style Enhanced Push-to-Talk (EPTT) feature. It can even connect to a company's existing radio (LMR) network through EPTT. It has two loud front-facing speakers that put out over 100 decibels, and dual microphones with noise cancellation so you can hear and be heard even in loud places. The phone also has multiple programmable buttons on the outside — PTT, Speaker, Call List, and SOS — so workers can use the most important features without even opening the flip.
It passed a set of military tests called MIL-STD-810H. That means it was tested against drops up to 5 feet onto concrete, shaking, extreme heat and cold, fog, salt water spray, blowing rain, low pressure, solar radiation, and freezing rain — and it passed all of them. It also has an IP68 rating, which means it is completely sealed against dust and can sit underwater in up to 6.5 feet of water for 30 minutes without breaking. On top of that, it is certified Non-Incendive Class I Division 2, which means it is safe to use in certain hazardous work areas where flammable gases or vapors might be present. The phone can even be cleaned with 70% alcohol or disinfecting wipes.
The DuraXE Epic was well-received for its durability, call quality, battery life, and enterprise features. The main downside is the same as most feature phones — it does not have an app store and only comes with basic built-in apps. But for people who need to call, text, push-to-talk, and survive a rough day at work, the DuraXE Epic does its job very well. It is still widely available through AT&T and third-party stores.
Identification
Here is how to tell if the phone you are looking at is a Kyocera DuraXE Epic.
It is a flip phone with a thick, boxy shape and chamfered (angled) corners. The outside is black hard plastic with rubber bumpers and textured grip surfaces. When the phone is closed, you will see a small black-and-white screen on the front (1.08 inches) below the rear camera. The Kyocera logo is printed on the front. On the left side of the phone, there is a large Push-to-Talk button with a red accent. On the top of the phone, there are programmable buttons for Speaker, Call List, and SOS. The phone charges with a USB-C port (not micro USB like the older DuraXE).
To confirm the exact model, remove the back cover and the battery. Inside the battery compartment, you will find a nameplate with the model number E4830 (or E4830NC for the no-camera version), plus the FCC ID and IMEI number.
Be careful not to mix it up with similar Kyocera phones. The DuraXE (model E4710) is the older version with a smaller battery, less memory, and micro USB charging. The DuraXV Extreme (model E4810) looks very similar but is made for Verizon, not AT&T. The DuraXA Equip (model E4831) is the U.S. Cellular version. The DuraForce phones are touchscreen smartphones, not flip phones.
