Background and Identification

Infant phototherapy or light therapy is used to treat cases of neonatal jaundice. Jaundice is caused by abnormally high bilirubin and causes yellow skin and eyes. This therapy, “lowers the serum bilirubin level by transforming bilirubin into water-soluble isomers that can be eliminated without conjugation in the liver,” according to the NIH.

In the commercially available systems, light is delivered via fluorescent bulbs, halogen quartz lamps, light-emitting diodes, and fiberoptic mattresses. Care must be given to provide proper eye protection, maximize skin exposure, regulate the temperature, and maintain hydration.
