Background and Identification
The Hyundai Elantra (also called the Hyundai Avante in South Korea) is a compact car manufactured by Hyundai, a South Korean automaker, since 1990. The Elantra was initially called the Lantra in Australia and some European markets, but disagreements between Hyundai and other automakers with similarly named vehicles led to the adoption of the name “Elantra” in 2001.
The Elantra is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive vehicle. In 1991, the Elantra replaced the larger Stellar and competed with the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, though with a smaller price tag. The first-generation Elantra (also called the J1) included a straight-four 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine that produced 113 horsepower. The first-generation Elantra could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 9.5 seconds. The J1 model was produced from 1990 to 1995. The second-generation Elantra (called the J2/RD, produced from 1995 to 2000) offered a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. This generation offered four-door sedan models or five-door station wagon variants.
From 2000-2006, the station wagon model was dropped for a five-door hatchback model. American variants of the third-generation Hyundai Elantra included standard front and front-side airbags, as well as power locks, air conditioning, power windows, and power steering. The fourth-generation Elantra (2006-2010) improved safety scores and was only available in a four-door sedan body style. These Elantra vehicles also had improved fuel economy and a five-speed manual transmission was standard.
The fifth-generation Elantra (2010-2015) added a two-door coupe variant in addition to the standard four-door sedan model. These Elantra vehicles included six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. The sixth-generation Elantra (2015-2020) dropped the coupe models but included gasoline and diesel options.
Hyundai vehicles can be identified by the Hyundai emblem, which depicts an italicized ‘H’ inside of a circle. Elantra models also include the Elantra emblem, which includes the word “Elantra” in capital letters.
