Background and Identification
Novasure by Hologic is a endometrial ablation system. According to the official site, “is designed to remove just the uterine lining—the endometrium—which is the part of your body that can cause heavy periods” The actual device uses a “metallized mesh electrode array” (wikipedia) and applies bipolar electrical energy to destroy the uterine lining (endometrium). The process takes about 5 minutes. Patients are able to leave after about an hour though the recovery can be a day or two.
In an FDA trial, 78% of patients had reduced bleeding and in 36% bleeding was completely stopped.
It is likely that Novasure or other types of endometrial ablation will result with the patient unable to conceive or carry a child to full term.
