Background and Identification
Histology and Pathology or Histopathology is the study of disease via microscopic examination of tissue. In clinical medicine, after a biopsy or surgical specimen of tissue is taken from the patient, it would be examined by a doctor called a Pathologist.
In order for the specimen to be ready for examination it must first be frozen or chemically treated to preserve it, then sectioned or sliced thinly, stained and finally it is examined under the microscope.
A Histopathology report may contain the following:
- the microscopic appearance of the tissue
- special stains
- molecular techniques
