D51844

Background

The DeWalt D51844 Type-2 is a heavy-duty pneumatic 20 degree round-head framing nailer. Some major features and components include the nail drive mechanism, magazine and loading, and fastener compatibility. The nail drive mechanism which dispenses nails at a pressure of 70-120 PSI. The magazine loading component allow for bottom loading of 65 nails at once and the fastener compatibility allows the handheld to drive nails ranging from 2" to 3-1/2".

This device was released in 2005 and originally retailed between $250 and $300 USD at major home improvement centers. However, it was discontinued around the late 2000's to early 2010's as newer generation framing nailers phased out this product. It was replaced by models like the D51850 and D51825 where the chassis was better balanced, redesigned internal valving for faster cycles, improved safety and cordless versions. This device belonged to DeWalt's flagship line of pneumatic stick framing nailers. The D51844 was a plastic coated framing nailer, the D51845 had slight features variations and the D51822/D51823 were 31 degree paper collated offset-head framing nail variant. The exact number of units sold is not classified however the DEWALT company sold hundreds of thousands of units of this family worldwide during its short production time. The biggest markets for the DeWalt D51844 electric nailer was in the United States and Canada, with other majors markets in Mexico, Australia and Latin America. The most common consumers within those markets include professional construction contractors, general farmers, carpenters, roofers, and serious DIYers performing heavy duty framing, subflooring, wall sheathing, deck building, and truss assembly.

The DeWalt D51844 did have one major recall in June 2005, where the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and DeWalt announced a recall because the contact trip on select units could malfunction and causes nails to eject unexpectedly. This was a known and very dangerous failure on the device, as well as after years of heavy use, prolonged moisture would cause the main piston O-ring, and other seals to rot and crack resulting in air leaking continuously. The most common issue was the O-ring failure and sometimes the piston assembly driver would wear down from excessive use causing incomplete nail seating or jams.

Identification

To identify the DeWalt D51844 electric nailer, look three sections. The first section is the round-head of the device. The head is the bulky round yellow piece; similar to the shape of an upside down egg; of the tool with DeWalt written on the side of the device. This measures roughly 13 inches from the flat top part of section one to the tip of the nailer. Section two is the long black section at the bottom of the device with DeWalt and other fine prints written on the side. This is the nail magazine to store nails to be used in the nailer and measures roughly 20 inches from one end to the other. Section Three is the handle piece connecting section one to section two with a right angle.

To distinguish this from other models the user can can look at the magazine angle. The D51844 angle is measured between 20 degrees - 22 degrees whereas its siter model the D51822 have a steeper angle of 31 degrees. The model number and "type 2" designation are stamped or printed on the silver metal data plate / warning label riveted directly onto the side of the main aluminum cap and these can also be used to differentiate the device from its related devices. Another way to differentiate from other brands is it comes exclusivity in DeWalt's signature high visibility yellow and black color scheme. As well as special marking including the molded in DEWALT logo on the side of the magazine and head of the device.
