Generational Breakdown

First Generation (DC/DE; 2001–2007)

  • Innovations: It was the first Citroën to feature multiplexed wiring (CAN bus), allowing for advanced features like hazard lights that activated automatically under heavy braking and an early version of the Lane Departure Warning System (AFIL).
  • Engines: Ranged from the reliable 2.0L EW10 petrol to the highly efficient 2.0L and 2.2L HDi diesels.

Second Generation (RD/TD; 2008–2017)

  • Design Shift: Swapped the "liftback" hatchback design for a traditional four-door sedan and a "Tourer" (wagon) to compete directly with German rivals like the BMW 3 Series.
  • The Suspension Choice: Uniquely, Citroën offered two distinct chassis: "Metallique" (traditional coil springs for a sportier, more communicative feel) and "Hydractive 3+" (for the classic floating sensation).

Third Generation: C5 X (2021–Present)

  • Current Tech: Built on the EMP2 V3 platform, it ditches the complex high-pressure hydraulic lines of the past for Progressive Hydraulic Cushions. These are effectively "shocks within shocks" that use secondary hydraulic stops to absorb massive impacts without bottoming out.
