Background

A cable modem is a type of network bridge that provides high-speed internet access to homes or businesses over a cable television (CATV) network. It is a device that connects to the coaxial cable network of a cable television provider, which carries internet data along with cable television signals.

The cable modem converts the digital signals from your computer or other devices into analog signals that can be transmitted over the cable network, and vice versa. This allows users to access the internet at much higher speeds than would be possible with a dial-up modem.
