Surgeons often use small surgical sponges during a procedure to absorb body fluids. Sometimes, the surgeon forgets to remove the sponge when the procedure is finished—and a surgical sponge left in a body can cause lasting harm. For this reason, many surgical sponges have small radioactive strips on them, so that they can be readily detected by X-ray scanners.
