Chassis & Platform Architecture

  • The Sigma Platform: The 2006–2007 CTS utilized GM’s first architecture to use ultra-high-strength steel structurally welded into key stress points. The chassis featured a fully independent suspension geometry with a short/long arm (SLA) layout up front and a multi-link configuration in the rear, isolated by a rubber-isolated subframe to isolate road harshness without sacrificing lateral stiffness.
  • Performance Suspension Updates: Vehicles equipped with the 18-inch Wheel Performance Package featured Nivomat self-leveling rear shock absorbers. These mechanical, gas-charged dampers utilized the vehicle's kinetic motion over road bumps to pump hydraulic fluid internally, automatically raising the rear ride height to its optimal geometric baseline when loaded.

Powertrain & Engine Specifications

3.6L VVT V6 (LY7)

  • Architecture: 60-degree 3564cc DOHC V6 with an aluminum block and heads, featuring a forged steel crankshaft and sinter-forged connecting rods.
  • Output: 255 hp @ 6,200 rpm / 252 lb-ft of torque @ 3,200 rpm.
  • Valvetrain: Continuously Variable Valve Timing (VVT) operating across a 50-degree range on both intake and exhaust camshafts, maximizing volumetric efficiency. It also used a dual-stage variable intake manifold (plenum tuning) to optimize low-end torque.

2.8L V6 (LP1)

  • Architecture: 2792cc down-sized variant of the High Feature engine family, retaining the 24-valve DOHC configuration.
  • Output: 210 hp @ 6,500 rpm / 194 lb-ft of torque @ 3,300 rpm.
  • Application: Served as the base powertrain, substituting the older 3.2L LA3 engine, utilizing electronic throttle control and a 10.0:1 compression ratio.

6.0L V-Series V8 (LS2)

  • Architecture: 5967cc (364 cu in) Generation IV small-block pushrod V8 with a cast aluminum block and high-flow "243" cylinder heads.
  • Output: 400 hp @ 6,000 rpm / 395 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm.
  • LS6 vs. LS2 Shift: While horsepower matched the outgoing 5.7L LS6, the 6.0L displacement increased the stroke and cylinder bore (101.6 x 92mm), shifting the peak torque curve 400 rpm lower in the rev range for improved corner-exit acceleration.

Drivetrain & Braking Hardening

  • Differential Upgrades: To remedy the notorious "wheel hop" and casing failures of the 2004–2005 models, the 2006–2007 CTS-V received a reinforced rear differential housing featuring asymmetric half-shaft diameters (differing wall thicknesses side-to-side) to cancel out harmonic resonance and prevent axle wind-up during hard launches.
  • Braking Thermal Capacity: The CTS-V was anchored by a Brembo setup featuring 355mm (14-inch) front rotors and 365mm (14.3-inch) rear rotors, clamped by fixed 4-piston monobloc aluminum calipers. The standard V6 models equipped with sport packages used smaller but thick 302mm front and 298mm rear ventilated discs with heavy-duty high-friction pads.
