Repair guides, support, and troubleshooting information for the first 13-inch MacBook Air to feature Apple's ARM-based M1 SoC (with an 8-core CPU and up to an 8-core GPU). Released in November 2020 and identified by model numbers A2337 or EMC 3598.

Unexpected device state 'DFU' expected "RestoreOS

I am trying to wipe my 2020 MacBook Air. I have a host Mac that I’m using Apple Configurator with. I am able to get the Mac I’m trying to wipe into DFU mode.

When I click restore, it gets on the 4th step and stalls, then I get a message saying:

“The System cannot be restored on this device.

Unexpected device state 'DFU' expected

"RestoreOS (Probably forced into DFU

mode externally)“.

I have used different USBC cables and keep getting the same message.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

You don't need to get into DFU to wipe your system! In truth it's not that safe for someone to recover your stuff!

Here's the right way: What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac and Erase your Mac and reset it to factory settings

I forgot to include that it randomly stopped working and tries to start up but then shuts down and restarts the process. I am unable to access home page.

@bobsmith41220 - Do you have access to another Mac system to setup an external bootable drive to see if booting up under it gets you to the Desktop.
