My laptop's audio keeps breaking up

The audio on my laptop keeps cutting out. I can be using it at a low volume, like 10%, but suddenly it sounds distorted and it's really painful to listen to, like the speaker is broken. This also happens when I'm using headphones. This has been going on for over a year, and I haven't had it checked. It's really strange; it just goes from being normal to completely breaking down. I don't know why.
