iPod Touch 1st Generation: Won't sync with Itunes anymore

The error message that I get when I plug my Ipod into my Macbook Air 11' is as follows:

iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch “Ben's ipod” because an invalid response was received from the device.

I've been plugging it into this same Macbook Air for about 3 months or so now, without issue. Suddenly this occurs. I checked for any new updates on the Macbook, and there were none. I tried restarting the computer, restarting the Ipod, and no matter what the same error message recurs. Is there any way around this problem?

I'd rather not spend $200 on a new Ipod unless I absolutely have to. It is about 8 years old, but all in all it has been functioning fairly well recently.

Thanks so much,

Ben

iPod Touch 1st Generation: Device stuck in recovery mode - iTunes won't download IPSW

I recently purchased a second hand iPod touch 1st gen, it’s currently running FW version 1.1.5 (I think). It’s stuck in recovery mode and no amount of forcing it out is working.

When I connect it to iTunes, it is recognised as in recovery mode and I am prompted that I must restore it to use with iTunes - fine.

I click OK, and click Restore, then “Restore and Update”

Now, I know that the latest supported FW of the 1st gen is 3.1.3, however by default, iTunes is trying to “Restore and Update” the device to 2.2.1

I click next and agree to the T’s and C’s

However, I then get this error

I can only assume it’s because iTunes is trying to download an IPSW that is no longer available, as Apple will not sign 2.2.1 any more. I tried finding the 2.2.1 IPSW online just to see if I could even get a little further than I am currently but can’t find it for this device anywhere. I have tried the process using older versions of iTunes (tried 11.0, a version of 10 and a version of 9). So far I have also tried using the “Tenor Reiboot” app to kick it out of Recovery mode which didn’t work, and I begrudge paying the £40 for the pro version to test any further on a device I only paid £15 for in the first place.

If possible, it would be nice to keep the device on an older FW, be that 1.1.5 or 2.2.1, but at this point, I will settle for getting it working on 3.1.3. Although, I have tried finding the 3.1.3 FW and can’t find that anywhere either.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I hope I’ve provided enough info.

iPod Touch 1st Generation: Factory reset gone wrong. Is it bricked?

I did a reset in my ipod to restore it to factory settings, and i unplugged it midway. Since it had a bad battery, it lost power. After giving it a new(er) batt, whenever i plug it in, it goes to the apple logo for about 15 seconds, then shuts off. Power and home button both (seem to) do nothing, and i cant seem to get it into dfu mode to restore it. my windows pc also cant seem to find it in device manager. Did i brick my ipod?

Example video of how it responds:

(idk y this vid doesn’t wanna work)

Update: I was able to get it into recovery mode and seen by iTunes. When restoring, their servers for the software don’t exist, so i have to use my own ipsw file. No problem! iTunes, however, says that it was in and wants the iPod to be in DFU mode. (vid 2) I don’t know what’s wrong though since it gives the same message when an iPod is already in DFU mode? (vid 3)

iTunes seems to give the same DFU error when restoring either iPod, so I’m not sure what the problem is. I’ve tried reinstalling iTunes, using different versions even(both new and old). Both iPods and pc have been restarted multiple times, to no avail, even different usb ports.(I don’t have a mac to try this on, or else i would have) I truly believe that my iPod is more than a paperweight, but there seems to be a large corporate entity standing in front of me. How do I solve this DFU problem?

Hello all,

I recently found my old Ipod Touch 1st Gen from my high school days. It's password locked, and obviously 10+ years later I've forgotten the password and locked the device.

I tried to restore the ipod using previously downloaded firmware, both 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 versions. When I attempt the restore, I get the error:

"This iPod was previously in DFU mode, but restarted and is no longer in DFU mode. To restore this iPod from DFU mode, disconnect it and place it in DFU mode again"

No matter how many times I restart the device (turned off, held home button, plugged in directly to itunes) it gives me the same error.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get past this error?
