iPod Mini: All parts replaced: clickwheel isn't working

I have a 2nd Gen iPod Mini. I initially replaced the battery and upgraded the hard drive to CF Flash. I was able to restore the iPod using iTunes for Windows. At the language select screen, I noticed that the clickwheel was completely unresponsive: no button clicks registered, and wouldn't scroll. So I ordered a replacement 2nd gen clickwheel from Elite Obsolete Electronics. I popped the replacement clickwheel in, and had the same problem. So finally I replaced the logic board, thinking that I might've damaged it in removal and reinstallation (I've heard about the C78 capacitor problem). That didn't work either.

So I have a 2nd Gen mini with CF flash, new battery, replaced clickwheel, and replaced logic board, and the clickwheel remains unresponsive.

Any ideas?

iPod Mini 2nd Generation: How long does it take to restore?

I replaced the hard drive in a ipod mini. It worked until recently when it showed the file with the ipod/support website. It's been 2 hours since I put the Ipod on the cable, Itunes asked to restore the Ipod right away. I haven't seen it restart, just says Do Not Disconnect on the screen. Is this a sign I didn't put it together correctly?

I'm using a PC and the new drive is 32gb.

After it was attached to the PC all night, no change. When I unplugged it, the screen became a language selection screen. Since it's out of the case I can't use the click wheel. Plugged it back in and the PC recognized it as an Ipod, but Itunes didn't ask to restore it nor did it come up as a device in Itunes.

iPod Mini: Has anyone put SSD larger than 256GB?

I’ve been modding my iPod mini. Largest micro SD memory card I’ve installed is a 256GB. Read it’s fine, so long as you don’t shuffle its files (as music) as It’ll supposedly crash — which I never do anyway.

Has anyone put in a 512GB or larger SSD? These micro SD memory cards are just so cheap nowadays, may give it a try.

Reason for doing this is as for added storage memory, and of course it'll be Rockboxed.

iPod Mini: After changing hard drive the device won't turn on now

Hello! I have been working on this project for awhile and it's frustrating me that it seems like I encountered another roadblock. I've bought a gen 2 mini for the purpose of modding it by giving it a new battery and flash hard drive, making its storage from 4gb to 128gb via micro sd card.

I got myself a new click wheel ( I broke my other one >>;; ) and Iflash board to insert the micro sd card and after putting the board in.. nothing happens. I thought maybe something was wrong with the batter but it booted up as soon as I put the old harddrive back in to test it, and I THINK I formatted the micto sd card right, I did it on my computer ( Mac ) by erasing it since I got no option to format it out right and still the device isn't turning on. I looked around online and I've seen some folks recommend charging it for awhile, since I tried doing since I remember the battery being kinda low, but even after that I got nothing.

I tried to use button combos to try hard resetting and such but still nothing. I'm honestly confused as what to do now because I don't want to break anything else. by accident, by maybe over charging or something, when it is plugged in it makes a pinging sound when pressed up to your ear, similar to a beep sound from game boy pokemon games. I have plugged the ipod into my computer and my moms but it doesn't show up still, not on itunes or finder.

If anyone has an idea of what could be going on or what I could do, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks! :3

iPod Mini: itunes, file explorer stop responding when iPod mini plugged

reposting my question from apples official forum to increase the chances of getting a response quickly lol

The Ipod is a 1st gen mini. the original itunes program from the first restoration attempt was the latest version, downloaded from microsoft's store app. im on windows 10

when i got it it was mac-formated. i was restoring it as usual when it accidentally unplugged during restoration and my computer crashed. The ipod then reboot by itself a few times, showed the sad ipod icon and then reboot again.

from the ipod it seemed that it was working as normal and in the about it said it was windows formatted.

when i plugged it back in itunes would take 10-30 minutes to run and theen would stop responding if i clicked literally anything. it wasnt recognizing the ipod. I have the ipod support service installed. So i went through like 90% of the win 64 versions of itunes from 2014 to 2018, even tried opening it in a virtual machine and on my moms win10 laptop. nothing. the whole time i was making sure itunes was completely uninstalled and deleted before trying another version/just reinstalling.

so i went to seek other solutions . first i ran the HDD test from diagnostics mode which said it passed. then i looked online for how to restore it without itunes and found this article about formating it from file explorer.

when i right-clicked on the ipod to try and get to the formatting options file explorer stopped responding. i tried troubleshooting it from windows' "devices and printers" program to see the same thing happen to that program. it seems every interaction a computer has with this thing just freezes everything.

i've been on this for 2 days and i feel like ive exhausted my resources so please help me im going insane

iPod Mini: iPod appears on iTunes for 1 second and then disappears

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an iPod Mini 2nd generation off of ebay. The iPod itself works good. However, when I plug it into my computer, it is recognized for a few seconds and then disappears. I don’t believe this is an iTunes issue either, because it disappears in Finder as well.

This also isn’t an issue with my Mac either, as I connected it to my PC and the same exact problem happened. It appeared in iTunes and Windows explorer for a few seconds and then disappeared.

The “Do Not Disconnect” message appears on the screen for a few seconds as well before it disappears and reverts back to the main menu.

I opened it up and disconnected and reconnected the battery and hard drive, to no avail.

Thanks!

iPod Mini: Display not lighting up?

My iPod Mini (2. Gen) has really tested my patience! I recently installed a new battery successfully but damaged the click-wheel connector along the way - a replacement has been ordered. In the meantime an iFlash adapter was ordered and arrived today.

I installed 128 GB of storage OK, but along the way the backlight on the LCD display seems to have stopped working. Normally the LCD lights up if the device is connected to power (or over USB to iTunes etc). Should be independent of software settings on the iPod. The LCD works otherwise, no obvious cracks etc.

I've restored the iPod again in iTunes/Music, but nothing has changed.

The entire time, I never went near the display ribbon cable or LCD display! I did have to disconnect and reconnect the iFlash adapter several times (as it is NOT very clear which was is "up" with respect to the orientation of the adapter! Could I have caused a short? I've check the ribbon cable for the display and cannot see any loose connection. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it as well.,.. no change.

Naturally, I would put the iPod into diagnostic mode, but I won't have a working click wheel for another week or two.

Asking here, as I would like to be sure I am making the right call about ordering a possible replacement.

Thanks, William

iPod Mini: Problems after battery replacement

So, I got 2 iPod minis (one first gen and one second) for free due to condition, and they didnt turn on or show any signs of life, but I bought a new battery from ifixit and replaced both the old batteries. The Second gen is working normally. The first gen was also working normally at first, but I noticed the battery was draining a little faster than the 2nd gen, even though they both had the same battery. The next morning, the first gen said it was dead, even though it had full charge the night before, so I plugged it in and came back an hour later. Once I tried to turn it on though, it showed zero signs of life. Could it be a faulty battery? Or maybe there’s some other problems with the iPod?

iPod Mini: My computer won't recognize my iPod Mini

I plugged my iPod Mini into my computer, and it showed the screen where it says do not disconnect without ejecting. iTunes didn’t recognize the device, and it didn’t appear as a hard drive under windows file explorer. About 30 seconds later, it showed the folder with the exclamation point. Every 30 seconds it cycles between the two screens. I thought it might be a hard drive problem, so I replaced the drive with an adapter to a micro sd and an empty micro sd, and have the same results. No matter which drive is installed, it shows the folder with the exclamation point when turned on and not plugged into a computer. What is wrong with it and how do I fix it?
