iPod 5th Generation (Video): O Death, where is thy Sting? (or Bono)

My 60GB 5th generation iPod was working just fine – for years – but the other day it joined the choir invisible, shuffled off its mortal coil, went to meet its maker. This iPod appears to be an ex-iPod: it's bleeding' demised.

This bucket-kicking was not preceded by a dropping accident, extreme temperature, nor battery run-down – just a sudden "F#ck you! I'm not going to work anymore!"

I've tried to charge it (multiple times) for multiple hours, tried to reset it multiple times (and, yeah, I know the drill), but nothing. Absolutifactually nothing.

Question: should I simply give up? #$^#, I hate throwing stuff into the e-landfill if it's fixable, but this iPod has all the hallmarks of a hardware failure that might not be recoverable.

Any suggestions?

iPod 5th Generation (Video): Other ways inside iPod

Hi Guys,

I know iFixit sells nice tools for this—and i have used them!— but i have had a real problem opening some of these iPods.

Has anyone come up with any real good alternative to the plastic tools? The thing is that some of the inner metal fingers that are part of the metal back JUST WILL NOT RELEASE, and i end up bending things seriously or breaking completely thru the plastic notches.

Just askin'? Thanks.

iPod 5th Generation (Video): Can't Restore iPod- unknown error occurred (1416)

I had an issue where my 60GB 5th Generation iPod ran out of juice and then could not be recharged. I bought and installed a new battery. With the new battery, the disk made clicking noises and could not be restored. Here's my story since then:

I bought a new 80GB hard drive and installed it.

The new hard drive could not be restored in iTunes

I bought and installed new ribbon cable to no avail

returned hard drive and ordered new one.

Installed 2nd 80GB HD installed with new cable

Itunes detects iPod and tells me it needs restoring

I get error: The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1416)

I can put iPod into Disk Mode but it does not mount.

I tried erasing iPod in Disk Utility but it fails with the following error: Disk Erase failed with the error: Resource busy

I tried repartitioning

I tried the Terminal reformatting technique and came back with Resource busy.

I opened in Drive Genius which can detect iPod, give me info on it and am performing an integrity check on it right now. DG failed to erase iPod.

Tried opening in Disk Warrior, but did not detect iPod.

I can scan the iPod with data recovery software.

Any other ideas out there? I've used my macbook pro as well as a PC to no avail. To sum up, new battery, hard drive and ribbon cable. What else could I try?

iPod 5th Generation (Video): Bad battery, logic board, or something else?

I didn't notice any precursor trouble before one day, I couldn't turn my iPod on. It's an 80GB iPod Video with original parts.

At first, when I pressed the center button to turn on my iPod, it displayed the normal Apple logo, but the screen turned off before it finished booting (in that way where pixels linger and gradually fade away).

I connected it to a computer to attempt to recharge it. Upon plugging it in, it went into some kind of reboot cycle, where it would display the Apple logo for a few seconds (backlight went on, too), but it always died before it actually got to the OS, giving a blank screen for a moment before starting the cycle again. I left it plugged in for a couple of hours, and when I checked again the cycle had changed slightly. It now displays a battery with a caution sign on it for about half a second, followed by the Apple logo for about half a second before the screen shuts off (this all happens before the backlight even turns on now).

If I plug the iPod into a wall adapter, I get exactly the same cycle. If I remove the iPod from a power source and try to turn it on, the battery/caution screen flashes for a moment before the screen turns off, and it will not display anything after that if I try to turn it on without external power. If it's relevant, if I listen closely I can just start to hear the hard drive spin up, and it got slightly warm to the touch after leaving it connected to power for a couple of hours.

My first thought was a battery problem, but my iPod was running just fine for multiple hours the day before this happened. My second thought was a bad logic board, but I'm really not sure what that looks like. Any ideas as to what's going on and what I can do?

iPod 5th Generation (Video): not charging after battery replacement

Just replaced my old battery with the one I purchased from you. Great and easy fix, loved your instructions. But here is the problem, even with the new battery my Ipod does not charge. Originally I had a block charger that overheated and even melted. I of course replaced it and hoped that replacing the battery would fix my problem. It works fine while it is plugged in either a block charger or my pc but it obviously does not charge my battery. The battery icon displays full while the Ipod is plugged in. Do you think it is possible that I have a "fried" logic board?
