iPod 1st Generation: Wish to replace hard drive with CF Card

Greetings...

My very original 5GB first generation iPod is finally giving out. My wife worked for an Apple company years ago when these came out and she got it as a perk for working for Apple. Well, it has been a helluva great toy, but the hard drive is wearing out (bearing I would assume) and the battery isn't quite what it used to be. So, I want to fix it. I saw this video online and thought that might work, but not sure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43ziWVWS4...

Can you advise? If the compact flash card isn't compatible, can I get a new drive? Preferably larger than 5GB I hope..

Many thanks..

Randall

iPod 1st Generation: Headphone Jack Collar broken off, how to fix?

Hi! New here, and very new to repairing my own electronics, so please be patient with me! I have a first gen iPod, and it is in GREAT shape. It works! It charges, it plays my music, it even looks great. I've fallen back in love with it after over 20 years. It has exactly one flaw. The little white collar around the headphone jack has partially broken off. This means that if I'm not super careful with whatever I plug into it, it will be staticky or even turn the iPod off. I'm assuming that means something is exposed which shouldn't be. I've called every electronics repair in my city and no one still works on these. I was looking for a solution, even if it's just a way to carefully hold a cable in the port. I don't intend to carry it around, I'm planning to set up a cool little retro "stereo" with my modified Apple Pro speakers and my old iPod, so it will be still! As an alternative, if it's possible to output through the firewire port, that would be fine too. (I can route through an amp if that helps) Any ideas welcome! Thanks!

iPod 1st Generation: Does anyone make/sell replacement batteries anymore?

So, I’ve got a 1st Generation iPod that I’m hoping to get back up and running. However, iFixit long since stopped selling 1st Generation iPod batteries, and on a quick search of both Amazon and eBay I couldn’t find any. Any ideas if there’s any hope of getting a replacement battery for this device? I know it’s 15 year old iPod…

iPod 1st Generation: backing up or transferring music from model 8541

I would like to know how I may back-up or transfer my music from the 2002 1st generation-scroll wheel, Model 8541, 10GB iPod to my laptop. I have gone to the iPod store and Best Buy and they do not have a transfer device with the correct adapter/port that fits this device since it does not have a USB port.

iPod 1st Generation: New battery not charging

I have a 10 gig, 1st generation iPod (yes, from 2002!) that won't charge. I bought and installed a new Newer Tech battery. When I plug it in, it powers up and the battery icon shows it charging. After a few minutes the screen goes blank. When it is disconnected from power it is dead. I have restored from iTunes and hard reset with no success. (BTW, when I hard reset while connected to power (press and hold menu and play) the screen goes blank, then momentarily flashes the dead battery icon, then the apple logo and powers up.)

Any ideas? Could the "new" battery be old and unable to charge?

Thanks for your help!

iPod 1st Generation: Replacing Firewire port. Where to buy?

Thought I might get my original 5GB iPod in working order and stick one of these flash SD setups. I just learned about these DIY mods a few months ago and am sorting through lots of new reading material…Interesting stuff!

Anyways, the iPod has been in a box somewhere , for more than 5 years now. Bought it used and besides replacing the battery once or twice, had no problems with it.

Then I started to notice, that I had to hold the firewire cable at a certain angle to the iPod to charge it up. At first it was no big deal. Just plug it in and gently push the cable in one direction or another. Like it was lining up one or more pins between the cable and plug.

It just seemed like the port was showing its age, and not as tight as when new.

Eventually it got to where it would take too long to find the 'hot spot' so it would charge. Had to hold it 'just' right and hope it would stay in that position after you walked away. Too much of a hassle so I stopped using it.

I've never seen iPod firewire components for sale anywhere, but haven't really looked either. I haven't looked at the innards as of yet, but I'm hoping it's no big deal to replace the component, or the board it's on. Or solder a new female firewire plug into the old brick.

Whatever works and is cheap.

Anyone have a similar experience with a 1st release iPod? Any advise?

Thanks!

iPod 1st Generation: Unable to restore iPod, tried multiple HDD's

My 1st Gen iPod is having trouble restoring via iTunes. I have tried different Firewire cables, HDD’s and even multiple computers trying to figure something out. I needed to replace the original 5GB HDD since it was dying out (rattly noises from loose parts in the drive). However both of the new drives despite being detected by Disk Utility (DU) and iTunes, kept spitting out an error 1429 from the iPod. When in DU, the drive shows up correctly reporting the capacity of the drive, and is titled Apple iPod Media (Uninitialized). A message would appear urging me to Initialize the drive however clicking initialize does not do anything. Attempting to Partition the drive or reformat would just lead to disk utility “waiting for partitions to activate” for an infinite amount of time.

The last thing of note would be the noise that the hard drives are making. When the iPod is plugged in but not being accessed by the computer, I hear normal whirring as a hard drive should. But if I attempt to restore the iPod or format the drive, consistent clicking sound can be heard. This was the case for the 3 different drives I tried to use for this iPod. Maybe I am unlucky and got 3 dead drives, but I certainly doubt so.

Hope I could find a solution here, really want to get this treasure up and running again. I will provide any screenshots or descriptions if I had missed something out. And thanks for anyone who bothered to read and help out here. I love iFixit and the community.

At the moment I have a Sosche usb-to-firewire adapter on the iPod HiFi, and on top of that I have the Auris skye wifi adapter, making it possible to stream AirPlay music straight to the iPod HiFi. The solution is very elegant, the looks not so much...

I am pondering buying a second set of the Sosche and Auris skye, strip them of plastic and combine them into a smaller package (3D printed new housing perhaps) but that project is for a really rainy day, though

iPod 1st Generation: New battery not charging. Battery icon flashing on and off.

Not sure what else to do here. I replaced the battery in my 1st gen iPod and it still isn’t charging. Immediately after battery install, it showed the menu interface for a split second then said ‘No battery power remains’ and turned off. Fair enough new battery I thought and put it on charge. Stuck on large battery icon turning on and off every two seconds for an hour. Tried hard resetting and were in the menus, with the small battery icon in the top corner showing the first of the four bars flashing like mad. Decided to leave it like this all night. Woke up this morning to the ‘No battery power remains’ message flashing on and off rapidly. Turned the iPod off and on and now I’m stuck on the large battery icon turning off and on again… this also happens on my second gen 20GB. Last thing I can think of is that I use a black aftermarket FireWire cable along with the Apple wall charger. Could this be the issue? Any answers would be much appreciated.

iPod 1st Generation: Why does my menu button not work?

The menu button on my 1st gen ipod doesn’t work properly. Everything else works fine: play/pause, scan forward/back, the wheel and the centre button are all fine. Sometimes if I press it hard in the right place the menu button will work but generally it doesn’t. Would it be a loose connection? Would be great if I could fix it without replacing anything
