iPad Air: solution to phantom/ghost touches ipad air

After trying multiple digitizers thinking they were defective, a few beers and some deep thought, I have found the solution to the problems we have been having associated with digitizer replacement on iPad Airs. I do not know if this works with other devices with ghost touching, but I have a good feeling it will. I wont waste your time with how I came to this solution, because I know you are reading this probably freaking out trying to figure out how to fix it. So read on.

What you need: kapton tape - i used this:

http://www.amazon.com/Mil-Kapton-Tape-Po...

1/4" is a good thickness, you might want to try something a tiny bit thinner - 1/8 would be ideal

Tape around the digitizer "wires"? on the edge. For some reason, there are grounding issues with some digitizers. I dont know if its because they dont go through the same quality control as apple parts, and the warping of the glass may be at fault, or what. Whats even more strange is some digitzers do it, some dont. (leading me to believe they may be touching the frame where they are not supposed to). Some have suggested the cables were pinched, but i had purposely pinched the cables and it didnt cause the issues, it just made the glass pop up and not seat correctly. I have included a pic for reference. Pass it along.

sorry for the crap pics but you get the idea. I will tape all of my digitizers from here out.

edit - all these thank yous and no upvotes? like con said below, tough crowd

iPad Air LTE: replaced glass, home button sunkin in?

hi, I just replaced my iPad Air's broken glass with a replacement from ifixit, the replacement was quality and basically if not certainly a factory item. My problem after a rather successful install is that now my home button is sunkin in on the left side? I am confused. I have the old glass, and I keep clicking the home button and its perfect. But then when I click the home button of the replaced glass, it's like I am sticking my finger in a hole before I hit the button...

Maybe someone from ifixit can responde and let me know if this is something that was supposed to happen. And if not inform me of how to remedy the problem.

Thank you.

iPad Air Wi-Fi: 2 New LCD's will not turn on after LCD replacement?

I am replacing an LCD on an iPad air but once the new LCD is hooked up the device will not power on. To check to see if maybe the port on the motherboard got burnt out, I hooked up the cracked LCD and was able to power it on and off. I then figured that the new LCD itself was bad. SO I returned that one and ordered a new one and the same issue persists. I tried holding the home button and power button as well. Any ideas?

iPad Air Wi-Fi: Home button feels sunk in and sticks

I replaced the screen on my first iPad Air ever. Before closing it up I did the usual QA check. And after closing it up I did it again. All was well on my bench. Two days later the customer contacts me to tell me that the home button was sunkin and sticking. Sure enough when he brings it back to me, it's sunk. I removed the screen and compared it to the old one (which thankfully I had not tossed yet) and there was a missing cushion. I replaced the cushion and sealed it again. I test it and it works fine. Call the guy to come get it and show it to him while he is there.

He calls me an hour or so later and says it still has the same problem. So I offer to replace the screen at no cost to hime. I order from a different company and make sure that I odrdered the screen with home button installed!!!!

I put the new screen in and transfer the cushion. Sure enough after a day of usage, the fellow calls me AGAIN and says the same thing is happening.

I know this person, not that well, but we travel in the same circles so I know he's not putting one over on me or anything like that. The problem is legit.

Anyone else have such a problem with an iPad Air? What did you do to resolve it?

Thanks,

iPad Air Wi-Fi: Dark spots on left side of LCD from top to bottom?

Dark spots on left side of LCD from top to bottom evenly spaced? They are not lines, its not a broken lcd, and its not a faulty lcd, a new one has the same spots. My only guess is maybe a backlight fuse? but the other 99% of the lcd is fine. It looks like only part of the back light is not lighting up. They are spaced about 1cm apart and go no deeper than 1cm into the lcd from the frame. And all the dark spots are identicle. Thanks! second time ive seen this, and anyone that can repair it?

iPad Air: IPad Air dead - no signs of life at all

Hi,

I am attempting to repair and iPad air 1474. It does not charge and the docking port looks ok upon visual inspection with a magnifying glass.

I have tried every known combination of reset and recovery mode.

It does not get recognised by a computer or with iTunes running.

After trying everything, I assessed that the fault is hardware based. I removed the glass digitiser screen as that is obviously the only way to access the internal components.

I am a PC repair engineer in case I sound like I don't know what I am doing and I have repaired several iPads before.

It belongs to a School so I suspect that the fault was caused by misuse. The information I have is that it worked fine one day and would not turn on the next day..

A damaged charging port sound like the first choice but as I said, it looks OK. I have seen two types of accidental; damage to a lightning port. One is that the port gets badly bent and reinsertion of a connector bayonet is not possible or the contact pins get pushed back too far and the pins can no longer align with the cable's bayonet.

Next possible conclusion would be a faulty battery.

Having found out the hard way by taking on an iPad mini 2 with a badly bent docking port and discovering the connection to the logic board is soldered, this rules out fitting an inexpensive charging port to see if it fixes the fault.

So I am not sure where to go from here. I am not sure how I can test the docking port or how to test the battery.?

I have a multimeter and a windows laptop and a macbook pro. All my diagnostic software is for computers.

Thanks in advance for suggestions and or instructions and tips.

iPad Air LTE: Smart Cover Locks iPad Air from Back Side

Howdy everyone!

I purchased my iPad Air (AT&T) from Craigslist with a broken digitizer/front glass panel, figuring that I could repair it for myself since I've repaired broken iPad digitizes many times, But this was my first time doing an Air.

The problem I'm having is just as the title says. After I sealed up the digitizer, everything works perfectly, except then I decided to buy a Smart Cover and now when I fold the Smart Cover back so that it lies flat against the backside of the iPad, it locks it!

This has become a serious nuisance for using it, and I'm trying to understand why it does it and how to fix it before I have to spend hours opening and re-sealing it again. I've seen on other posts that the circuitry installed on the home button cable is what allows the Smart Cover to lock and unlock the iPad. Is that true?

Could it be that the digitizer/front glass panel that I bought on eBay is faulty? Is that why it locks inappropriately? Could it simply be because it's a cheap Chinese replacement part?

Any ideas would be much appreciated! For now, I can use my iPad like normal, it's just irritating that my iPad locks when I fold back the Smart Cover. I'm so used to using the Smart Cover freely on my old iPad 2! :]

Thanks so much!

iPad Air: Battery will not charge past 1%

My ipad air only charges to 1%. The battery is flat and when I attached the lightening cable it will make the icon of the cable disappear and show a battery in the middle of the screen that appears to be charging. The ipad gets to 1% and turns itself on but that is as high as it gets. Eventually the screen goes black again and the ipad does not recognise that the cable is still attached. If I remove the cable from the wall charger and put it into the USB on my laptop the whole process begins again until I change it back to the wall charger. I have tried different cables and chargers, some Apple and some not. I initially replaced the charge port as it seemed that was the issue because I could wriggle the cable and get the ipad to show charging. I have checked the soldering and it all appears fine. I Have tried the reset method and leaving the charger attached all night but nothing changes. I am beginning to think the problem may have been the U2 chip all along. Does anyone else think that is a fair assessment or is there something else I should be looking at?
