iPad 8: Why is my Home Button not recognizing a press?

The problem

I have an iPad (8th Gen) that will not recognize any presses from the Home Button. I have factory reset the device without any effect on the issue. Touch ID works fine, and I can navigate between the home screen/other apps using touch gestures. But any kind of pressing on the home button is completely unrecognized by the device.

What is known so far?

Damage History

As far as I'm aware, this device has had no other known damage. The screen is the same screen that the device has been bought with, and no other components have been replaced by myself or another party. The device may have been dropped, but there appears to be no evidence of external damage.

Troubleshooting so far

As stated in the description of the problem, I have attempted to factory reset the device and have power cycled the device. Neither of these has had any effect on the issue. The home button does not show any issue with Touch ID and does not seem to be loose in the housing.

Any assistance/advice that can be given is immensely appreciated.

Update 1/24/2023

I figured I would give an update to anyone else who would be having this issue. Until recently I haven't had the resources to open the device up. I have an order placed with iFixit for a new adhesive for the screen so that I can perform a more in-depth analysis of what is causing the issue. I will update this post soon.

Update 2/6/2023 (part 1)

Adhesive strips arrived today! I'll be opening the device up here pretty quickly. I will follow this update with a summary of what I found, hopefully with pictures.

Update 2/6/2023 (part 2)

This will hopefully be my final addition to this question. I was able to get the device open without any issues as shown by the image below. As @dadibrokeit pointed out, a hard press/decent bump could knock the bracket for the button loose. This did end up being the case with this device. Once I re-adhered the bracket I reassembled the device to where I could turn it on and make sure the home button would work. Sure enough, I was able to use the button normally. I have not tested Touch ID yet, but nothing was damaged during the repair process, so I am willing to bet that it will be fine and will make sure tomorrow morning. Otherwise, the device seems to be working as expected. Thank you all for the support!

iPad 8 Wi-Fi: An unusual case of non-functionality

Please help! I have asked before and tried a few different things.

I have an iPad 8th gen. I replaced the screen and the home button failed. Whilst I couldn’t see any damage to the cable I half expected the issue.

2 days after, the iPad starting ghost touching. It disabled itself and would do crazy stuff. I assumed a simple solution of covering the surrounding on the interior of the screen. This had no affect so I ordered a new screen. It still never worked!

I looked a bit further into it and discovered the iPad does this even with no digitiser connected. This was strange!?

I somehow managed to get it to work by turning it on, then connecting the digitiser and finally the LCD. However, it suddenly stopped working again. I have tried doing the same thing but it will not work. Any suggestions?

iPad 8: Is replacing the home button while keeping touch id possible?

I was replacing the lcd of my ipad 8 when I realized that I had cut the ribbon cable for the home button. not sure how or when it happened but it happened. while looking online for a replacment I learned that touch id is tied to the serial number of the device and apple is the only one with the tools to reprogram a new one. So I got thinking theres no way apple is the ONLY person who can do it right? does anyone know if its possible to either send my ipad in to somone with the tool and get it replaced for like less than $50? or will I just have to live with having to touch id?

Hello people,

i really need your help. You guys seem to be great at giving good answers that help hence why I’m here.

I have an iPad 8th gen. It had a smashed screen of which I replaced. I did lose touch id, but other than that, all went well.

Later that night, it started doing its own thing, including zooming in. I tried everything I could think of and have made a few discoveries.

1) It happens even when the digitizer and home button are disconnected. Suggesting, it isn’t related to the new digitzer.

2) There is a buzzing noise coming from the top end of the iPad, I believe the battery connector.

3) It doesn’t want to turn off. I can’t swipe it off as it is going crazy.

4) Forcing it to turn off doesn’t work, it turns itself back on shortly after.

Please can someone advise my next steps. I’m really stuck and don’t want to have to throw away such a good iPad.

Thanks people

I recently replaced my friends screen after her autistic son shattered it. The first replacement, the touch screen wouldn’t work. I figured possibly faulty screen.
iPad 8: Ipad 8 not charging after screen replacement, though port still works

Hello! I’m a bit stuck with this one:

I recently did a screen/digitizer replacement on an iPad 8. While tricky, I managed to get everything neatly reattached and reassembled. The only uncertainty I had with this repair was disconnecting the battery, the only method I found online was to slip a non-conductive card of some sort (i used a plastic sheet) in between the battery connector and battery to sever the connection (since there is no other way to disconnect it without removing the battery)

Anyway, iPad booted back up and everything worked as it should, until I went to charge it. Upon connecting a lightning cable, there is no charging indicator and the battery symbol is still red.

However:

When turned off, plugging the ipad into a charger turns the ipad on

When plugged into a computer, it recognizes the iPad.

Any idea as to what happened here, and how I go about fixing it? my only guess is to disassemble it again, completely remove the battery and fully separate the connection, then reassemble.

Thanks
