iPad 4 Wi-Fi: Is a hot plate for screen removal the way to go?

I've been repairing iPad screens for a while now. I've been using a hot air gun. I was told that a hot plate is the way to go and makes removing the screen that much easier and quicker. Do you guys think this is true? Is it worth the investment to buy one? What temperature do you set it at? Do you heat both sides? And how long do you leave it on for? Thanks!

iPad 4 Wi-Fi: iPad shows battery and plug icon when already plugged.

I have a iPad 4 to work on, the digitizer has already been replaced. The problem is, the iPad shows the red empty battery with the lightning cable at the bottom. Even when it is plugged, it still ask to plug the device to charge it. I tried to go into recovery mode on iTunes and it won't work at all, iTunes won't recognize the iPad. Anyone has an idea what could the problem be, I would like to try everything possible before needing to remove the digitizer.

Here is a picture:

I get this even when it is plugged which is weird because it should only show the battery and not the cable. Also, the screen flash every 5 sec before going back to the battery/lightning cable icon.

iPad 4 Wi-Fi: Gray lines on LCD after screen replacement, now iPad wont power

I cracked the screen of my 4th gen iPad and decided to attempt the repair myself. After a good 2 hours of painstakingly removing the shards of screen I finally connected the replacement and decided to test it before completely reassembling. When I first powered on there was grey lines running across the screen so I powered off and rechecked the digitizer and LCD connections - all looked fine. Powered on again, same thing happened. Disconnected LCD and digitizer a second time and tried again. Now my iPad wont power on at all. I've tried a forced reset by holding down the power and home buttons, nothing. It seems totally dead. Tried to restore from itunes but due to the new iOS 7 upgrade, I need to first disable Find iPhone on the iPad - can't get in to the iPad to do so. iTunes at least recognizes the iPad and find iPhone says that my battery is still at 57% so its definitely not an issue with charge. Not sure what the exact problem is and would really appreciate some help on what to try next. I'm guessing I accidentally damaged the LCD and I will order a replacement but given that the screen lit up to begin with and is now unresponsive I fear I have caused some other damage? Thanks in advance for your help.

iPad 4 Wi-Fi: flex cable home button

Dear all,

I have a small problem with repairing the Ipad 4, model A1458 and I hope one of you can support me.

First of all, my customer told me it was an ipad 3 version, so I take of the glass/digitizer as usual. By heating up the glue and pulling the digitizer out of his frame I saw an broken flex cable. So my that is why I thought ( this isn't the iPad 3 but 4 version ).

So after the digitizer was off, I saw an flex cable between the mainbord and "I guess home button or bracket". This cable is broken, so I believe the home button will not work anymore.

I'm searching now for an solution but I can't find an supplier who can deliver such cable including home button.

Does someone has experience with this or can someone tell me how to solve this problem?

Many thanks for the efforts in advance.

Kind Regards,

iPad 4 Wi-Fi: Ipad 4 stuck in headphone mode

So iv got an ipad 4 thats had water damage and its stuck in headphone mode. Its not the flex as if I unplug the flex and restart the ipad it still thinks the heaphones are plugged in even though there isnt even a headphone flex plugged in.

I do microsoldering repairs and have always wondered how the headphone detect actually works, as iv seen this issue on an ipod before too.

On the heaphone line coming out of the audio ic there is the CODEC_HP_DET line, it then gets to a resistor which I presume is to prevent over current, and then a ferrite, which I presume is to prevent emi / smooth the signal.

Then from there it goes to the flex connector, but from there its a mystery......

Is there a line that connects to here to push it high or is it pulled to ground when the headphones are plugged in ?.

Im just wondering as they dont care about the heaphone socket, as they just use the speaker on it, so wasnt sure if I pulled that line down or if I can solder it to another line to pull it high to turn off the heaphones.

The only other option is changing the audio ic and that is caked in underfill and has the touch ic on the other side of the board so is a bit of a risky one.

Id just really like to know how the circuit itself works really.

EDIT >>

Another odd thing is, that when playing system sounds it plays through the speakers just fine, and if I click on the volume buttons when not on youtube it says 'volume', yet when I go into youtube on safari it says 'headphones'., also if I record with the camera it says headphones too.

iPad 4 Wi-Fi: Failing: sleep, rotation, headphone, mic, cams and some weird stuff

I have bought this cheap iPad 4 use as a home automation center, mounted on the wall. The description stated it had a few defects, which I thought I could get over. Upon closer inspection some more things are wrong with it:

Touch screen was flakey (ribbon cable was sheared)

Sleep by pressing the power button is not working, not even from assistive touch. Hold to power down ís working

Screen rotation: not working, does work from assistive touch. Screen lock switch is working, so are the volume buttons

Headphone jack: only some loud pops and light noise

Microphone: no input (Siri cannot hear me)

Cameras: both front and back camera show only black

Apps from the app store cannot be installed: after pressing “Install”, spinner keeps on spinning without any popup

Apps cannot be deleted: long press does bring up wobbly icons and the ‘X’, but pressing the X does nothing

After the first boot, the screen stays black. You can tell it is on because when initiating Siri (home long-press) or taking a screenshot, you can hear the corresponding sounds. After a reset (home + power long press), you can get to the home screen by pressing the home button (the home screen does not show itself automatically)

I already replace the touch screen (working OK now), home button and WiFi cable. I can see no damage to the logic board, and judging by the screws, it has not been removed.

I was thinking about replacing the headphone jack assembly, since this connects all the components which are (partly) failing: iPad 3/4 Wi-Fi Headphone Jack

The hardware issues seem logically connected to this part, but I have no clue about the seemingly software-related issues.

Any ideas that replacing this part will fix my hardware and/or software issues? Thanks for any input.

Edit: FIXED

Everything is fixed after I replaced the headphone jack assembly! As you can see below, this part was torn by the previous owner. Thanks for the hints.

iPad 4 Wi-Fi: iPads stuck in DFU mode and not powering on

I work for a small business that fixes iPads for a refurbishing company. There is a handful of them (iPad 2s and 4s) that have been tossed aside as being not able to turn on and multiple different parts have been used in them such as new LCDs, new digitizers, new batteries, new charge ports, etc; and still do not power up. However, when plugging into the computer the PC recognizes these iPads and they are stuck in DFU mode and can't get out. The screen normally does not light up unless being prepared to restore , the apple logo will appear with a bar underneath it, but not always.

iTunes is never able to restore these iPads as they keep getting stuck on "Preparing iPad for restore" or "Waiting for iPad", and when I try to use ipsw files I get an error 3194 or 4014. I already looked at my hosts file and nothing unusual is there. I tried 2 different computers (both Windows) and new cords as well.

Has anyone encountered something like this before? Could this indicate the iPads were previously jailbroken? Is there a way to "flash" software onto the iPad, or force the software back onto the iPad not through iTunes? Sorry if these questions don't make sense- I don't know much about jailbreaking whatsoever.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you
