iPad 4 Wi-Fi: Is a hot plate for screen removal the way to go?

I've been repairing iPad screens for a while now. I've been using a hot air gun. I was told that a hot plate is the way to go and makes removing the screen that much easier and quicker. Do you guys think this is true? Is it worth the investment to buy one? What temperature do you set it at? Do you heat both sides? And how long do you leave it on for? Thanks!

iPad 4: Efficient removal of iPad 2/3/4 assembly adhesive - opinions needed!

Hey, guys. I've just sent this question in an email to a fellow repair technician I'm in contact with, and thought it may well be worth posting publicly, as I'm curious as to the different answers and techniques people may have.

I find myself searching "how to clean adhesive off ipad" far too often, in the hope that I'll stumble across some "magic bullet" in the form of a new chemical cleaner or updated guide to help speed the process along.

The technician I've emailed has done literally hundreds of them, so I figure he's got the removal of old adhesive down to an art form at this point. I'm approaching my 20th iPad repair, and it's still taking much longer to completely remove old adhesive that I'd prefer.

Here's my current technique, which I hope you can weigh in on and help me improve, as I don't feel it to be particularly efficient:

I completely remove the old glass assembly and LCD.

I remove any and all of the actual 'tape' I can find using the flat end of a plastic spudger.

I pour a small amount of WM Barr's "Goof Off!" into a spray bottle's protective cap.

I dip a cotton swab in the GO and use it to saturate an area on the iPad's metal border, and leave it for 2 minutes.

I use a combination of dry cotton swabs and the flat end of the plastic spudger to wipe up as much of the glue as possible.

I wipe the area clean using a bit of tissue paper.

Rinse and repeat - saturate, leave for 2 minutes, wipe up, tissue paper - until all of the residue is gone in that area. To try and speed things up, I tend to have one side saturating while I'm working on the opposite side.

I give the areas a clean down after all of the residue is removed using 99% isopropyl and cotton swabs.

The technique works, but it's taking me maybe an hour per iPad, and I'm convinced there has to be a better way to do it. A better adhesive remover, or that I'm missing some important element that I should be taking into account.

Goof Off! was recommended by one of the other fixers on this forum, but to be honest I'm not particularly impressed with it. I was expecting the glue to be completely dissolved after a couple of minutes contact with it, and that it'd just wipe up with the residue GO after.

Cheers,

Craig J.

iPad 4: touch screen not working (even after replaced screen/digitizer)

Two weeks ago my iPad stopped responding to touch (as far as I know, nothing happened to trigger this. I didn't drop it, it just stopped working). Tried restoring. Nothing.

I bought the screen/digitizer/home button ifixit part and replaced it last night. Thankfully the power & home buttons and screen still work after the replacement.

Unfortunately, the iPad still does not respond to any touches and I cannot slide to unlock. I tried a DFU restore this morning, and that did nothing either.

It didn't look like anything was wrong with my original screen/digitizer and it doesn't look like anything is wrong with the replacement.

Are there are other things that could be preventing the iPad from receiving touch input? Anything that I can try fixing?

(before I tried these repairs, the genius bar only was willing to replace it for $300).

I'd love any suggestions. Thanks.

I have a iPad 4 to work on, the digitizer has already been replaced. The problem is, the iPad shows the red empty battery with the lightning cable at the bottom. Even when it is plugged, it still ask to plug the device to charge it. I tried to go into recovery mode on iTunes and it won't work at all, iTunes won't recognize the iPad. Anyone has an idea what could the problem be, I would like to try everything possible before needing to remove the digitizer.

Here is a picture:

I get this even when it is plugged which is weird because it should only show the battery and not the cable. Also, the screen flash every 5 sec before going back to the battery/lightning cable icon.

iPad 4: Error 4005 when restoring iPad 4 in DFU mode

Hi!

So my aunt got a new iPad Mini 4 to replace her old iPad 4th gen. She told me if I could fix her old iPad she'd think about handing it down to me (glad iOS 10 will support it haha). She took it to the Apple Store and they said it would be a $300 fix due to a hardware issue. But I am certain that it's a software problem. The screen lights up but no further progress is made. So, I put it in DFU mode and tried to restore it. But I got error 4005. I'm so frustrated right now. I really want to fix it because of her promise to consider handing it down to me. Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: Battery was dead - that was cause for error, I think. Now I have it plugged into wall outlet, and as of 7:41 ET it has the black screen with battery icon (4 horizontal red bars in the icon) and has been this way for half an hour. How long will I have to wait for it to charge enough to power on? The 4005 is currently not a problem and I don't think it will be in the future.

UPDATE 2: It powered up, now wants me to "Connect to iTunes" (the screen with the iTunes logo and Lightning cable illustration). So I will - it's probably to restore it.

UPDATE 3: It is now charged enough to boot but it displayed the connect to iTunes screen. I have connected it to iTunes and am performing a restore with an IPSW file for iOS 9.3.2. The extraction worked, now the iPad is showing a progress bar under the Apple logo. Progress bar currently empty. Will update. EDIT: screen went black, stuck at Waiting for iPad, so I quit iTunes (I'm on a Mac) and plugged the iPad back into the wall outlet - I think it ran out of battery again because I didn't let it charge long enough.

Thanks,

iPad 4 Wi-Fi: Gray lines on LCD after screen replacement, now iPad wont power

I cracked the screen of my 4th gen iPad and decided to attempt the repair myself. After a good 2 hours of painstakingly removing the shards of screen I finally connected the replacement and decided to test it before completely reassembling. When I first powered on there was grey lines running across the screen so I powered off and rechecked the digitizer and LCD connections - all looked fine. Powered on again, same thing happened. Disconnected LCD and digitizer a second time and tried again. Now my iPad wont power on at all. I've tried a forced reset by holding down the power and home buttons, nothing. It seems totally dead. Tried to restore from itunes but due to the new iOS 7 upgrade, I need to first disable Find iPhone on the iPad - can't get in to the iPad to do so. iTunes at least recognizes the iPad and find iPhone says that my battery is still at 57% so its definitely not an issue with charge. Not sure what the exact problem is and would really appreciate some help on what to try next. I'm guessing I accidentally damaged the LCD and I will order a replacement but given that the screen lit up to begin with and is now unresponsive I fear I have caused some other damage? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi everyone.

Got a 7 months old iPad 4, and its dead as a dodo, battery ran out while using it, connected it to the charger the next day, and it never came back on, no apple logo, no charging symbol, does not respond to any reset procedure, two chargers (12 and 10 watt) was tried, and 3 cables, also tried connecting it to different computers, both mac and pc, no reaction.

And yes, its still under apples 1 year warranty, but since it was sold in Latin America, and i'm in Europe they don't want anything to do with it.

Its been left on the charger for 3 days, and no change.

Did the battery simply just pack up and died totally, or should i expect a logic board failure since the screen just stays black.

iPad was never dropped, never exposed to water, and is in pristine condition, except being a paper weight. :D

iPad 4: iPad 4th generation boot loops after repair

Hey guys, got a question from my other technician. He replaced the Digitizer on an iPad 4th Generation. Tested it and everything worked fine until the customer brought it home. Now apparently the device boot loops three times then starts up after the third try. The device when we gave it back to her was on iOS 7 7.1.2 so that was fully updated. She had called and I informed her that either backing up the device and doing a factory restore and then restoring it from that back up or updating the device to iOS 8 (8.0.2) to see if maybe the software is the issue. That didn't work either. So we have it back here in the shop and we are attempting to do research but nothing has come up that is worth any value as far as information goes. Let us know what you think or if you have ran into this problem. He did search the forum for any similar problems and couldn't find anything. Any help would be fantastic! Thanks!
