iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: Is it the Power Supply or the Logic Board

My imac intel 24 alum 2.8Gh Emc2211 won´t do anything when I press the power button. I´ve checked wall outlet, power cord, opened and cleaned the dust in it. I´ve read that probably power supply or logic board may be the culprits. I want to repair them myself. How can I be sure which one is responsable. Is there any way to test it when, I repeat, my computer does not give any signal of life (as if it would be unplugged) Thanks for your help

Update

Hello Mayer, at last I received the Power Supply yesterday and I assembled it a minute ago. My iMac is back in service! for a few seconds I was afraid of pushing the button and not hearing the chime... but there it was. Thanks again for your help, and thanks also to the members and participants of the ifixt it site.

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: top half of screen is greyed out

The top half of the screen is greyed out starting at the center of the screen and progressively darker as it goes up. I hooked up an external monitor and it works fine. When first turned on the top of the screen flashes on for a second. I could also use a teardown of this model and where I can get parts for it. The only screen replacement I've found costs $699 and I don't know if this would fix the problem. I've seen a couple of other questions that refer to half screen problems but no real answers. I tried to buy an answer from Apple with no success. The machine is three weeks out of warranty.

Update

I wanted to bring this question back up because I'm working with Miro to do a tear down and repair manual on this machine. We don't have one. I still don't have an answer that I know for sure will work and wanted to bring it before the attention of possibly some other contributors. I've subscribed to the Apple thread on this problem with no results. Any ideas? Thanks.

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: Headphone/External Speaker Jack stopped working

I had powered Altec Lansing speakers hooked up to my 24" iMac and they worked fine for ~1 year. I recently upgraded my RAM with no difficulty, however afterwards, the headphone jack no longer recognized the presence of the external speakers. The sound preferences panel "output" tab shows "Internal Speakers" and "Built-in Output" regardless of whether the external speakers are plugged in or not. Rarely and for a moment, if I plug and unplug the speakers from the headphone jack, the sound panel occasionally shows "Digital Out" but still no sound and it quickly reverts back to "Internal Speakers." Any thoughts?

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: How can I dislodge a stuck CD from the CD/DVD drive slot?

For no reason I ended up getting a music CD lodged in my CD/DVD drive (slot). It will not come out with the usual restarting while holding down the eject key. If I try to eject it by any of the desktop, menu or keyboard options, the icon will go away as if it is ejected but the disk will continue to make a clicking sound over and over again. It will not come out. If I restart, it will continue making that sound as well. It sound as if it is about to eject but won't. I can stop the clicking by inserting a stiff piece of paper in the slot and moving it around until the disk stops clicking.

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2111: Overheating causing graphic issues

Hi;

A few months ago I noticed my iMac acting strange, with my screen not refreshing and everything on the screen would have residual images. I did some searching on the apple boards, and others were saying it has to do with the fan not working properly and overheating. They recommended I used smcFanControl, which has done the trick so far. Is there a permanent fix to this? Something I can replace? Appreciate any info.

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2267: Power Supply pin (voltage, start other?)

Hello,

I would like some insights about iMac's power supplies, especially the Early 2009 24" (A1225 EMC 2267).

I decided to tinker with an old broken iMac (machine that shuts itself down) to make it a Media Center with my Rasberry Pi and its Hifiberry + an LCD controller. But to do it right, I need to use the power supply for the screen (+ fan and why not also power the raspi).

But for that, I need two things:

The voltages (and current) of the output connectors which are obviously not standard (12 pins for the 12v-3.3v and 12 pins for the 24v that runs towards the inverter of the screen, although for the latter, I don't really care).

Know which pins to connect to activate the power supply (if I had this element, I could measure the voltages myself).

For now, I've spotted three things:

*     Pin 1 = Ground

*     Pin 2 = 12v always on

*     Pin 4 = 3.3v always on

*     Pin 6 = Ground

For the rest, I'm drying up, if you'd give me a hand, I'd be extremely grateful.

Update (08/09/2019)

Hello,

I've made some progress in my tests, I've managed to activate the power supply!

It is sufficient to make a bridge between the ground (PIN 1,6,7,12) and the 3.3V (PIN 4), which activates pins 8, 9, 10

So we end up with these values:

On the 12V output (2x6 pins)

Pin 1 = GND

Pin 2 = 12VDC -> Always On

Pin 3 = GND -> if SATA connected

Pin 4 = 3.3VDC -> Always On -> PS_ON

Pin 5 =?

Pin 6 = GND

Pin 7 = GND

Pin 8 = 12VDC -> If On

Pin 9 = 12VDC -> If On

Pin 10 = 12VDC -> If On

Pin 11 =?

Pin 12 = GND

On the 24v output (1x12 pins)

Pin 1 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 2 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 3 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 4 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 5 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 6 = GND

Pin 7 = GND

Pin 8 = GND

Pin 9 = GND

Pin 10 = GND

Pin 11 =?

Pin 12 =?

A last connector is present on the power supply, it is a ground that seems to be dedicated to the 5V (it is connected to one of the SATA GNDs and to the motherboard).

We can see that this power supply only provides 12V and 24V, as surprising as it may seem, it is the motherboard that is in charge of transforming the 12V into 5V! (the cable between the power supply, the motherboard and the hard disk confirms it).

So I still have Pin 5 and 11 on the 12V port and Pin 11 and 12 on the 24V port which are a mystery (if someone has an idea, I'm a buyer)...

I found the electrical schematic of a Liteon PE324101UN-LF power supply (which also seems to be used in other iMacs), there seems to be some info, but I can only guess the usefulness of these pins....

On the 12V output (2x6 pins)

Pin 1 >>- +12V

Pin 2 >>- +12V

Pin 3 >>- +12V

Pin 4 >>- GND

Pin 5 >>- GND

Pin 6 >>- GND

Pin 7 >>- +5VS

Pin 8 >>- +5VS

Pin 9 >>- +5VS

Pin 10 <<<- AC_DET (Alternating Current Detection?)

Pin 11 <<<- P_DIM (Power DIMming?)

Pin 12 <<<- BL (LCD BackLight?)

Pin 12 <<<- PS_ON (PowerSupply ON !)

On both 24v outputs (1x12 pins)

Pin 1 >>- 24V

Pin 2 >>- 24V

Pin 3 >>- 24V

Pin 4 >>- 24V

Pin 5 >>- 24V

Pin 6 >>- GND

Pin 7 >>- GND

Pin 8 >>- GND

Pin 9 >>- GND

Pin 10 >>- GND

Pin 11 <<<- P_DIM (Power DIMMING?)

Pin 12 <<<- BL_ON (BackLight ON?)

For AC_DET, I found this definition:

AC adapter voltage detection input. Valid AC adapter input range is set using resistors forming a voltage divider which are connected between ACDET & GND and ACDET & AC adapter.

P_DIM should reduce the output power of the 24V PINs to reduce the brightness of the display?

BL_ON, turn on the LCD?

In short, full of new questions.

Update (09/09/2019)

Well, I finally succeeded in measuring everything I wanted.

I made a little schematic for those who would be interested.

If there's a mistake, don't hesitate to tell me.

oldturkey03> BL_ON needs to be powered in 5v to turn on the screen. For P_Dim, it's more complicated, I think it's about frequency, but the LCD converter will do it.

mayer>My power supply works very well, it is here a question of knowing what its specifications are to power a Raspberry Pi and other accessories without Apple motherboard! ;)

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: How can I upgrade my early 2008 24" iMac?

I am looking for any possible way to upgrade my current iMac. I've done some research with mixed results, and am looking for a more concrete answer. I would like to upgrade my RAM, HD, and if possible, my processor and graphics card (Even if this means I need a new motherboard, I'm still willing to do it!). Here's what I currently have:

- Model: 24" iMac 8 (early 2008 model)

- Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

- RAM: 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (Two 2 GB Modules)

- Graphics Processor: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB

- Hard Drive: 320 GB Hitachi HDT721032SLA380 (SATA)

My goal is to maximize my system as much as possible, because I use Music, Graphic Design, and Architecture software that requires a lot of RAM. I would like to get at least 8 GB of RAM (preferably 16 GB), a 2 TB HD, and if there is anyway to upgrade to a Core i7 processor or anything remotely close to it, I would like to do that as well. Please help me figure this out! Thanks!

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: iMac presents symptomatology of HDD failure & Graphics Card failure!

Dear Mac Users,

i am desperate for true help.

My iMac one day on boot presented a white screen with a folder with a question mark on it. After extensive test i four that probably is a HDD failure. I replaced the default Toshiba HDD with Seagate ST31000524AS 1TB, and i installed Lion on it. Everything was working great!...for 1 week. Let's cut into chase. Pathologic symptomatology started the day before yesterday (1st day), continued with quite a bit different form yesterday (2nd day) until today (3rd day).

1st day:

In the morning iMac used to freeze when i was working with him. Also there where times (few) with screen distortions and times (about 10, starting from yesterday) when the beach loading ball was appearing.

On the afternoon i found my iMacs screen freezed. Nothing was happening. I tried to restart, but with no luck. Startup hangs on the Apple logo with the loading circle there. I also did the following:

1. I did reset the PRAM. iMac booted 10 minutes and freezed immediately, i could operate it at all.

2. Three more times i tried to reboot it stuck on the Apple logo.

3. I pulled out the RAMS and chime does sound (check for logic board failure i found on Google, but i do believe it is a graphics or logic board issue).

4. I did boot from Verbose mode and there is an error message coming up write from the start when system is loading drivers saying "failed to load AppleUSBblablabla.kext (i don't quite remember more from the name cause iMac rebooted and i didn't memorize it).

5. Perhaps iMac is hotter than before.

6. I tried to see iMac from Macbook Pro via firewire but with no luck (firewire logo was flashing on the screen of iMac though).

2nd day: Morning

Today i went to an apple authorized technician.

I explained to him everything i tried. First thing he managed to do is to start the computer. White screen again..

Afterwards, he tried to start something like hardware test (edit: finally i learned that was the cooling diagnostics) but from the local network. It succeeded. 2 errors found: one red warning for the graphics card and one orange/ yellow for the HDD.

Last thing he did, he boot from an external hard drive. Black screen, appeared. Technician decided to do a hard reset, an when he pressed the power button, boom! The desktop appeared. Yeah, it is weird!

That moment i left the technician to do the rest. He telephoned me after 45 minutes. He proposed to replace the graphics card and afterwards the HDD. I explained to him that i dont think this is the best way to follow, cause ten days ago, as you read, i replaced the HDD already. So something else might be the problem that on second time triggers problems to the graphics card and to the HDD. He could not answer what is the cause of the these problems...

2nd day afternoon:

i managed to find apple service diagnostics and after many many unreasonable errors of disk utility i managed to put it on a usb.

I tried 2 times to run the EFI service diagnostics and i noticed that the iMac seemed to froze after 40 minutes, although the time was running. Then exactly i remembered the words of the technician. "probably it is the graphics card that cause the screen to froze, but the timer is running".

From my nature i am a perfectionist, and many times i believe that people dont give all of their efforts on resolving a problem of someone's else. So i decided to run the EFI one more time and just leave it...i went to play a bingo. I won 260 Euros. "the money for the replacement of the graphics card!..." i thought...

When i returned home after 2 hours the EFI test was almost complete!!! 2 errors found. Here are the pics:

http://cl.ly/3z2j0Z443R0j1B2O0i3s

and

http://cl.ly/0U0l3s0J0l1E2V3H0u3W

So the first one says:

a. Fan HDD test 2-Long Motor Test

System turns on motor and verifies that the motor is on.

ERROR - Motor did not reach target speed in time

TEST FAILED

b. Short random multi-block test test 1 - Full Read Test (DMA Full Read Scan at 1250)

- Reads the entire HD checking for slow - read failures.

ERROR - Reading took longer than the average time

- TEST FAILED -

What draw my attention was the fact that the EFI service diagnostics UI, is different from the one that technician run...then i think i remembered a post on the apple service diagnostics thread, which referred to the fan control something...i got really suspicious. I immediately wrote an email to the technician asking him if what he did is to run the fan control check program....

He replied...yes...

So i think that he just checked the fans of the system? And this fan check showed problems on the graphics card fan(!?)...i was there when this operation took place, but i didnt know what was going on. So if it truly was a test of all iMac's fans, then how he concluded that there is a problem with the graphics card?Hmm....

I want to add that i tried to put my macbook pro on FW mode in order to chose it as startup disc from the iMac. If the OS would load fine then it would be a HDD problem. Unfortunately, the system seemed to hang up, but i have to admit that i could leave it a little bit longer in order to see what will happen at the end. But, i then thought, if everything expect the HDD was fine, then the iMac should start normally...

2nd day: 3 hours later

i put now my macbook pro in fw mode and on the second attempt i managed to boot. login and see the whole system from my iMac. Currently i am writing from my iMac which sees the Macbook Pro via FW. No screen distortions, no nothing...

so, what does this experiment tells to us?

Furthermore i did succeed to boot from a USB running Lion installer. When i went to disc utility and selected the internal HDD of iMac this message appeared:

"This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Backup as much of the data as possible and replace the disk. See an authorized Apple dealer for more information". Also there was a "SMART status: failing"

http://cl.ly/1R2N121z1l0T0k1W0p0C

Could the HDD cause all the problems? It is a SEAGATE...maybe it is incompatible?

Here is an Apple error report from the first unsuccessful try to boot Lion from Macbook Pro on iMac via FW.

as you see...is there an error with com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily

3rd day (today):

I run istat menu pro 3. The results are the following:

http://cl.ly/1h3i3S2W3p250J3b191V

They seem normal to me after cross checking them with my cousin's iMac which is the same model as mine. I don't know what the 0s mean, but i rely on you guys!

I finally managed to run Hardware Test from the Leopard DVDs that came with my iMac.

http://cl.ly/222Y2a2e361e0D0p2f3c

Another vote for HDD failure i suppose...

I dont know why, but after the EFI srvice diagnostics, iMac is "stronger" and somehow better.

I run techtool pro 6 which said that the same thing as the disc utility: the HDD needs replacement.

I run then data rescue 3, same message: the HDD is dead.

Did anybody see the pics above? From the EFI service diagnostics emerge 2 errors. I think that one of them comes from HDD2 fan.

So...do,i have a combined problem? Graphics card and HDD.

About the graphics card: when i boot lion that sleeps insid macbook pro from iMac, i cannot see something that rings bells for a graphics card problem...maybe something inside causes the system to overheat?...i dont know...

Currently i am on my iMac using my Macbook Pro as start disc via Firewire. There is not something that make me say: i have a graphics card problem! Maybe the iMac gets too hot and caused the HDD to die and graphics card to slow down?

And moreover i dont know what to fix first...ideas?

Please help!

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2267: Hard Drive icon missing in 10.6

I just opened the box on this baby. 10.6 pre-installed. I can't find a hard drive icon. Has it become a hidden file? I have a Hard Drive icon on my MacBook Pro but it was upgraded to 10.6.

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: After changing HDD, CPU fan goes to 3500 rpm on power-on

Hi,

I just removed my old HDD, just to install an SDD in the HDD slot, and an HDD (1TB SATA on SATA-to-IDE-cart) in my Optical Slot.

Everything seems to have gone smoothly, except... For seemingly no reason, my CPU fan goes to 3500 (CPU at 30-60°C), and my HDD fan to 1300 (HDD at 50°C). I think, at least the CPU fan shouldn't do so...

I already tried resetting the SMC, and reopened it to look if I maybe removed or forgot to reattach a temperature sensor, but both did not bring any solution at all.

Any Ideas?

Thank you!

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: Why won't my iMac turn on?

My 24" Intel iMac (A1225) won't turn on.

When I plug the iMac in, the left diagnostic LED (#1) on the logic board lights.

When I press the power button, LEDs 2 & 3 light, the optical drive makes a clicking sound, and that's it.

The fans do not spin, the hard drive does not spin, the Mac startup sound is not heard, the display does not light up.

I've tried the following with no change:

-Resetting the SMC

-Attaching an external monitor

-Reseating the RAM

-Replacing the RAM with other known good RAM

-Booting with video card removed

-Sent the logic board and video card to Powerbook Medic for repair, they said they did a reflow of the logic board pins at the video card interface, and the video chip on the video card was re-balled and reflowed.

-Powerbook Medic also claimed the power supply was fine, but I don't know that they actually tested it.

None of these things have made any difference and I'm running out of ideas.

Any suggestions?
