iMac Intel 24" EMC 2267: Can I upgrade early 2009 iMac Graphics card

Hello,

I've been looking around to see if I can swap out my current graphics card for a better one. Having seen many conflicting and sometimes confusing answers I thought I'd ask on here in the hope someone has tried and tested!

I have an early 2009 24 inch iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06ghz with 8gb RAM and the GPU is an ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4850

I saw a guide on here that showed someone successfully changing theirs, but what I wanted to know was if it was possible to upgrade to a different card with more memory, 1GB or higher.

Things that worry me are, would another card fit ok? would there be overheating issues? and is there Apple firmware that needs to be pre installed for it to work?

Many thanks in advance

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211: My USB ports aren't working after installing MacOS Sonoma

I recently acquired a imac Intel computer through a bidding on abandoned storage unit. Anyways when I got her home cleaned up and turned on It was outdated and not updating with the current MacOS operating system. I ended up using an external hard drive to update it to the Sonoma version. Everything was great and then it had an update through apple's automatic software updates.

Now my USB ports just stopped working, and now I can't do anything after I turn it on. I can't type anything. I can't click on anything to get into it. I did read somewhere online that the newer Mac computers don't have USB ports in favor of Bluetooth and wireless connections, so that could have something to do with it, but I need those to revert back to the older macOS version just so I can get all my programs and pictures off of it and figure out how to go from there as far as updating it goes.

Any information you can provide would be great. I'm not super tech-savvy when it comes to Apple products, so please baby steps with me.

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2267: What is a CR-VPH2 screwdriver bit

I'm working on the repair guide for the 24" A1225 iMac. The captive screw on the RAM access door is a Phillips screw, but strange one. It's shallow and a standard phillips does not work well. I found the correct bit in my security bit set. It's a CR-VPH2. I can't find a wiki that explains just what this is or the initials stand for and don't want to put something in a guide that I am uncertain of. I believe the last part stands for Phillips Head #2 but I don't know what the rest is for. Anybody know?

iMac Intel 24" EMC 2267: Power Supply pin (voltage, start other?)

Hello,

I would like some insights about iMac's power supplies, especially the Early 2009 24" (A1225 EMC 2267).

I decided to tinker with an old broken iMac (machine that shuts itself down) to make it a Media Center with my Rasberry Pi and its Hifiberry + an LCD controller. But to do it right, I need to use the power supply for the screen (+ fan and why not also power the raspi).

But for that, I need two things:

The voltages (and current) of the output connectors which are obviously not standard (12 pins for the 12v-3.3v and 12 pins for the 24v that runs towards the inverter of the screen, although for the latter, I don't really care).

Know which pins to connect to activate the power supply (if I had this element, I could measure the voltages myself).

For now, I've spotted three things:

*     Pin 1 = Ground

*     Pin 2 = 12v always on

*     Pin 4 = 3.3v always on

*     Pin 6 = Ground

For the rest, I'm drying up, if you'd give me a hand, I'd be extremely grateful.

Update (08/09/2019)

Hello,

I've made some progress in my tests, I've managed to activate the power supply!

It is sufficient to make a bridge between the ground (PIN 1,6,7,12) and the 3.3V (PIN 4), which activates pins 8, 9, 10

So we end up with these values:

On the 12V output (2x6 pins)

Pin 1 = GND

Pin 2 = 12VDC -> Always On

Pin 3 = GND -> if SATA connected

Pin 4 = 3.3VDC -> Always On -> PS_ON

Pin 5 =?

Pin 6 = GND

Pin 7 = GND

Pin 8 = 12VDC -> If On

Pin 9 = 12VDC -> If On

Pin 10 = 12VDC -> If On

Pin 11 =?

Pin 12 = GND

On the 24v output (1x12 pins)

Pin 1 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 2 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 3 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 4 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 5 = 24VDC -> Always On

Pin 6 = GND

Pin 7 = GND

Pin 8 = GND

Pin 9 = GND

Pin 10 = GND

Pin 11 =?

Pin 12 =?

A last connector is present on the power supply, it is a ground that seems to be dedicated to the 5V (it is connected to one of the SATA GNDs and to the motherboard).

We can see that this power supply only provides 12V and 24V, as surprising as it may seem, it is the motherboard that is in charge of transforming the 12V into 5V! (the cable between the power supply, the motherboard and the hard disk confirms it).

So I still have Pin 5 and 11 on the 12V port and Pin 11 and 12 on the 24V port which are a mystery (if someone has an idea, I'm a buyer)...

I found the electrical schematic of a Liteon PE324101UN-LF power supply (which also seems to be used in other iMacs), there seems to be some info, but I can only guess the usefulness of these pins....

On the 12V output (2x6 pins)

Pin 1 >>- +12V

Pin 2 >>- +12V

Pin 3 >>- +12V

Pin 4 >>- GND

Pin 5 >>- GND

Pin 6 >>- GND

Pin 7 >>- +5VS

Pin 8 >>- +5VS

Pin 9 >>- +5VS

Pin 10 <<<- AC_DET (Alternating Current Detection?)

Pin 11 <<<- P_DIM (Power DIMming?)

Pin 12 <<<- BL (LCD BackLight?)

Pin 12 <<<- PS_ON (PowerSupply ON !)

On both 24v outputs (1x12 pins)

Pin 1 >>- 24V

Pin 2 >>- 24V

Pin 3 >>- 24V

Pin 4 >>- 24V

Pin 5 >>- 24V

Pin 6 >>- GND

Pin 7 >>- GND

Pin 8 >>- GND

Pin 9 >>- GND

Pin 10 >>- GND

Pin 11 <<<- P_DIM (Power DIMMING?)

Pin 12 <<<- BL_ON (BackLight ON?)

For AC_DET, I found this definition:

AC adapter voltage detection input. Valid AC adapter input range is set using resistors forming a voltage divider which are connected between ACDET & GND and ACDET & AC adapter.

P_DIM should reduce the output power of the 24V PINs to reduce the brightness of the display?

BL_ON, turn on the LCD?

In short, full of new questions.

Update (09/09/2019)

Well, I finally succeeded in measuring everything I wanted.

I made a little schematic for those who would be interested.

If there's a mistake, don't hesitate to tell me.

oldturkey03> BL_ON needs to be powered in 5v to turn on the screen. For P_Dim, it's more complicated, I think it's about frequency, but the LCD converter will do it.

mayer>My power supply works very well, it is here a question of knowing what its specifications are to power a Raspberry Pi and other accessories without Apple motherboard! ;)

My old iMac runs HomeassistantOS. I don't need the monitor for this and it just uses unnecessary power. How can I disconnect the monitor from power as soon as the machine is running? I am thinking of a switch on the side of the housing.

iMac Intel 24": No Bootup with T9500 CPU

Hi

Hoping to upgrade my mid-2007 24” iMac to a ‘Penryn’ CPU, I very carefully read/absorbed lots of detail descriptions/accounts of how/why/what not to do, followed them meticulously and fitted a (allegedly) new T9500 CPU.

All back together, I plugged in and tried the start button.

Nothing - apart from the usual two quick buzzes from the optical drive. Took the ‘glass’ and the alloy frame back off, tried again and the same result plus noted very small flick of the CPU fan. Numbers 1, 2 and 3 of the LEDs to the right of the memory slots come on but nothing else happens, no chimes, no screen illumination, nada! - and I waited 15 minutes in hope.

Put the old CPU back in and away it goes, as reliable as ever.

Fearing I’d missed something I’ve done the same exercise three times now, all with the exact same result. I now KNOW I’ve not messed up because as soon as I put the old CPU back in, Bingo! away it goes, perfect boot, everything. I’m writing this on it.

There are lots of articles about how to do it, none mention any problems booting afterwards. There are only two posts that say the T9500/T9300 might be incompatible amongst the very many that say they are perfectly OK, other than speed reporting errors. The two I’ve found saying the CPUs are incompatible are effectively disputed in the following posts.

To be candid I really don’t care if the speeds are reporting incorrectly, all I need is SSE 4.2, which the T9500/9300 have and that will allow me to install Catalina with a patch.

Bottom line: Have I probably got, as I suspect, a faulty CPU, or is there somewhere some definitive information that says the T9500/T9300 are NOT compatible - and that incompatibility something is more than just the misreporting of speeds.

Update (06/18/2020)

OK, I understand the concept of the EFI not being able to use the T9500/T9300. That said, I have never (happily) had to dig into my iMac’s bowels to see if the conflict might be there.

At the moment I’m on the latest (last ever?) update of El Capitan and I’d understood that any EFI upgrades came embedded within the OS updates as they were incorporated - or is that a misunderstanding as well?

A couple of examples of what spurred me to try and give my iMac a new lease of life can be found in the following links:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmLkRk3Z...

(even if his technique is a bit off)

and a whole series of articles like this from a well respected blogger, with very specific details regarding what will and what will not work:

https://lowendmac.com/2018/penryn-t9300-...

I’m running a Mid 2007 24” iMac 7.1 that I’ve had from new - apart from the screen size, just like the example used in the youtube I referenced. Is it possible there is some subtle difference I don’t know of that is foiling my attempt and could you point me in the direction of finding it please. It does seem a little hard to take that all of the youtubers/bloggers are full of it and peddling the theory for some reason best know only to themselves - unless, perhaps, to capitalise on the disposal of an excess of unsaleable T9300/500 CPUs?

Update (06/30/2020)

It’s fixed!

It was a dud T9500. The replacement worked and booted straight up as soon as fitted.

No one was ‘at it’, it’s not a myth, it works and was a bit of an undertaking but with care and attention, quite possible. The only thing not reported correctly is the CPU details and the FSB speed. Who cares? It is working and markedly quicker. Most importantly it allows upgrades to a later OS.

To upgrade to Catalina, Dosdude1’s tutorial is excellent and all his patches and updates work well. Just make sure you follow it to the letter. I would put an image of ‘About this Mac up but can’t see how.

A 13 year old iMac, running Catalina, for the outlay of £125 and a few hours of work and effort.

Hi all!

A friend of mine gave me a broken imac 24". I would like to recycle the power supply for another project, however i don't know the pinout, well i could easily find the Vcc with voltmeter. I just need to know which pin will switch on the unit, and if it's a "connect to Vcc" or "connect to ground" system.
