iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: replacing X7900 to T9300 for macOS Sierra install Is it worth it?

I’m wanting people to weigh in on installing macOS Sierra on 20" 2007 iMac. I installed a X7900 in it a few years back, but this CPU doesn't support SSE 4.1 instructions. The T9300 does and should work in this iMac. Same socket and same FSB 800. I’m also upgrading WiFi card to a BCM94360CAX combo card. Using an adapter and U.FL to MHF4 antenna adapters.

Does anyone see any problem with this being able to work after the upgrades are in place?

Update (01/09/2017)

So with the macOS 10.12.4 beta 1 and beta 2 the iSight camera doesn't work on our 2007 iMacs. It shows up in hardware but won't turn on. I am working on how to fix this.

Also, If you want Night Shift to work on our iMacs you can use clover boot loader with a smbios to trick the iMac into thinking it is a late 2013. You will have to apply a fix for USB because changing it to a late 2013 iMac smbios breaks all but one USB and also bluetooth (which is considered to be on an internal USB port) the patch that I have fixes all this. If anyone is interested let me know and ill make a right up.

I’m thinking of making some videos to post on youtube at my channel Nandor690. I do AppleTV stuff right now but I think I'm going to also get into making videos on hackintoshes and unsupported real Macs as well

Update (01/09/2017) #2

I have figured out how to get Night Shift to work natively (Without using clover or doing any crazy hacks). Ill be posting a write up on this thread.

I'm still working on getting iSight working on 10.12.4 beta 1 and 2. Will keep everyone updated.

Update (01/27/2017)

What I am working on now.

As you know, macOS 10.12.4 comes with the new feature Night Shift. But it doesn't work on our iMacs because they don't support Metal. late 2012 iMac is the first year for that.

I used Clover boot loader to make a smbios for a 2012 iMac and now my iMac thinks its a 2012 and night shift works!

A few draw backs are

2 of the 3 USB ports don’t work

Bluetooth doesn’t work

iSight camera doesn’t work.

I am working on fixes for these now. (Remember, those things don't work because I made my iMac think it is a 2012 instead of a 2007. NOT because I updated to 10.12.4. It is safe to update.

I’ll report back when I have fixes ready. I plan on setting up a couple threads in different forums and will link them here for you guys

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: Is it possible to replace the processor from 2.4GHz to 3.06GHz?

I already have 4gb memos and am also replacing the 250gb HDD with a 500gb hybrid SSD but I was thinking about replacing the original C2D 2.4GHz (E8135) with a C2D 3.06GHz (E8435), is that possible? The order number is MB323LLA.

I've searched A LOT on Google and it seem's ok, it'll fit on the socket and all but I don't know if it'll have any heating issues - for that I'm thinking about buying the 24" CPU heatsink as well, will it fit?

No, unfortunately I don't have the money to just buy another iMac so my only option will be to upgrade mine - if that's possible, of course. :)

Any help here?

Update

Well, I already bought the processor (fingers crossed hehehe) and now I ask you guys: does anyone knows if the heatsink of the 24" iMac will fit a 20" iMac?

I'm asking 'cause my only "source" are pictures on the internet and by what I've seen on those I'm really in doubt.

Here's the 24"heatsink:

http://tinyurl.com/4m8k7a5

Here's the 20"heatsink:

http://tinyurl.com/468os42

And here is the 20" iMac with it's own heatsink where you might get an idea of the space available:

http://tinyurl.com/4tt5dj9

By those pics I think there is a chance it will fit, but also there's a big chance it won't, does anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

== Final Update 09/18/2011==

Well, it took about 9 hours, but it's finally done! :D

To be fair, it should be ~6 hours, but the video card wouldn't work (no surprises as it was really a gamble - it was a ATI Radeon HD2600 but from a HP 8510W) so I had to start over from the beginning.

To those thinking about doing the same, know that this is real hard work - and I don't mean only the hours!

Granted it isn't as challenging - and scary - as changing the wi-fi antenna in my iBook G4 12" but it was so hard that I was sweating most of the time and got some blisters of blood in my fingers.

I don't remember hating something so much as I hate those "bleeping" Torx screws! Darn!!

Anyway, here are the tools I used with the parts I bought on eBay:

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/6158/...

Now the before and after screenshots:

Before - http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/783/b...

After - http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/7852/...

One other thing I knew before hand was that I would need to adapt the 2,5" HDD where it was the 3,5" HDD so I improvised some sort of bracket. But it turns out that the holes in this iMac's HDD are different from the ones in the HDD I used as a model, so I had to improvise in the improvisation :P

http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/9209/...

Oh and credit where it's due: I would've never done that if it weren't for the guides I found here. Honest!

So thank you guys at iFit, you didn't make the job easier, but certainlly made it possible - and less risky! :)

And last, but not least: yeah, now it's WAAAY faster!! :D

My 2210 iMac won't power up, so I have taken it apart, following the ifixit instructions for power supply removal.
iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: black screen, no chime, no keyboard - Solved!

My iMac at start up went through the boot halfway then shutdown suddenly. When I booted it back up it did the same thing then went to a black screen.

I tried resetting the SMC, PRAM etc ... then realized that the keyboard was not communicating with the computer. I double checked the keyboard on my home iMac and it worked just fine, but nothing with my office computer.

Brought my office system home to trouble shoot. Checked LED lights and all but number 4 are lit. I checked all cables and connections and everything appears to be fine. The machine powers up and the DVD drive engages but then nothing happens. No boot chime of any kind. I can hear the HDD running and I removed and checked the RAM, no change.

I tried using an external monitor and hooking my computer up through target mode, my iMac and the external monitor did not find the computer because the ports are not communication? Without a working keyboard how do I speak to the computer.

I finally replaced the video/graphics card with a used but warrantied replacement unit that I purchased online. I followed every step precisely. Crossed my fingers and turned it on and nothing.

I have had it turned off for two weeks now trying to come up with my next move. Today I turned it on and still nothing. It powers on but the computer does not turn on.

Any suggestions or direction would be very much appreciated.

Update (02/05/2016)

I just wanted to update everyone on the status of my machine. I have finally got it back up and running!!!! I am so excited. The logic board was truly the missing piece to the puzzle. I received the part in the mail saturday and had time this evening to work on it. I put the last screw in place, plugged it in and held my breath. The sound of that chime was music to my ears :0) It is working like a champ. A bit slower then I remember haha....but I think I can finally put that larger hard drive in now. That will be the icing on the cake. Knock on wood that nothing goes wrong with that. But after all that I have been through so far, it should be a walk in the park. Thank you Meyer for all your guidance and support. And I can't thank the people at applepartsexchange enough for providing me with the logic board. A good ending to a long and interesting journey.

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2105 and 2118: Can I replace the GPU?

The GPU (ATI Radeon X1600 w/128 MB) in my white iMac Intel Core2Duo (2.16 MHZ) seems to be faulty...

Can it be replaced?

If it is the case, will it be so expensive that I should instead buy a brand new computer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: CPU upgrade from 2.66GHz to 3.06GHz

Hello there. I've bought last summer an iMac 20' 2008 for 500 bucks. I'm very satisfied with it but since few weeks i'm thinking about upgrading the CPU to an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz and the ram to 4+1GB.

No problem for the RAM, but the CPU upgrade is more difficult. I've already read the Chris and Carlos's posts and Chris helped me a lot. My current exact CPU is an Intel E8335, and I want to buy this one Ebay which is a 8435, the one in the iMac 24'. I'm pretty sure it's the right one but i'd like a last agreement :).

My concern is about heating. As Chris misses the screw of the heatsink, he couldn't tell me I he has overheating problem from the upgrade.

So, do you thinks I will have heating problem after the upgrade ?

Thanks

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: iMac 2008 20inch - CPU upgrade

Hi there,

I´m the owner of a 20¨ iMac, early 2008. I do not plan to replace this machine yet, so I looking for (cost effective) ways to speed it up.

Current specs are:

2,4 GHz CPU

6GB RAM

120GB SSD ( OS and Applications only )

I know the CPU can be upgraded to a 2,66 GHz model. A small speedbump, but also very cheap: $10 on eBay.

My question:

Is it possible to use the 2,8 Ghz CPU from the 24¨ model.

According to Wikipedia, the TDP is the same:

44W - Core 2 Duo E8235 - SLAQB (C0) - 2.8 GHz

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In...
