iMac Intel 20" EMC 2316 (Edu): Found in trash and EFI locked, can I bypass and disable it?

I found this iMac in a lot of two at the transfer station today. The last owner removed the glass panel and... lost it I guess, removed the RAM, and removed the HDD. I put new RAM and an SSD in it only to find when I tried to boot off a USB it had an EFI lock. I tried the RAM trick for models around and/or before this era and that has allowed me to bypass the lock and boot from USB but upon a second boot the EFI lock has returned. Has anyone discovered a flaw that can be exploited to bypass and disable the EFI lock on models of this era or do I need to go the hardware route and re-flash the EFI chip?

BTW I know that this is an anti-theft data safety type feature and it should be assumed by others that I stole it if I don't know the EFI lock password but I swear I have not stolen this more then decade old EDU iMac, that would be unbelievably stupid of me to do.

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: Is PC2-6400 compatible with EMC2133 iMac?

Hello!

I wanna upgrade my iMac EMC2133 original configuration and add some RAM. I found some ram stick of DDR2 PC2-6400, and those are usually backwards compatible in most mainboards, but i don´t know if this is the case. I know that it uses 667 ram, but it will work with 800Mhz ram?

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2105 and 2118: Upgrades available for 2006 iMac 5,1 Processor, Memory, and Graphics?

Hello Forum!!!!

I'm not a computer stud, but I have basic ability for mechanics. I have repaired computers, phones, and iPad screens in the past successfully (and unsuccessfully too!!!HA!) so now I'm thinking instead of junking my two old 2006 IMacs I want to upgrade them. This is because my six year old is totally into computers so I thought it would be fun for him to see the guts of one and further that passion. If I break one then I'm thinking I will probably get it right on the other.

I want it so that my son can play games, I can record the TV while we play games together, and it can run the latest softwares and upgrades for a few more years.

***They are late 2006 imac white box 20" 2.16 intel core duo 2gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram.

I just don't know a thing about components. I don't want to go crazy on budget, but it isn't my main concern. I would like help if anyone could weigh in on what fits inside the computer and is a good all around component.

This question hasn't been asked since 2010 so I'm thinking there is some good stuff out there for cheaper.

What Memory?

What Processor?

What Graphics Card?

(for gaming and recording, editing video)

Thanks a ton for your input!

This is what it says when I click on about this Mac.

Thanks for updating. And thanks for the info!

Update, I'm not sure if the image shows.

The memory says Bank 0/ DIMMO 1G DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz

Same for Bank 1/DIMM1.

So I look for these in 2 GB slots each, correct?

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: CPU swap from T7700 to T9500 on iMac 7.1 EMC 2133

Hello all,

I have an old 2007 iMac 7.1 standing around in the attic and wanted to give it a new go. I’ve already maxed out the RAM to 6GB and equipped it with a 750GB SSD which worked quite well.

I also wanted to upgrade the CPU and maybe try and get Mojave running. There have been reports of successful upgrades to a C2D T9300, so I figured I might try my luck with a T9500 SLAYX which I happened upon. I went through all the hoops and swapped the CPU just fine, but after reassembly the machine wouldn’t boot. It would power up and the optical drive would initialize - but nothing after that (black screen).

So I’m wondering if the T9500 is incompatible with my machine or did I get a faulty CPU? And if the T9500 is incompatible, (why) would the T9300 be?

Thanks so much,

Imac G5 20" intel/iSight model A1207

After powering up the iMac, I get for two seconds normal screen, then it turns black, boot noises are normal, no other anomalies.

video signal is present, I checked the screen with flashlight and can see faint text and graphics.

Putting it into sleepmode, after waking up it gives 2 second normal screen than it turns black again...

Already opened it and checked caps on PSU, inverter board and MOB, visually no suspicious parts present, the 3 diagnostic LED's are all lit.

Am I missing something here, or can this only be the backlight tube?

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2105 and 2118: iMac Won’t start up

I had my trusty old flea market find, an iMac A1207 (late 2006)

standing around, powered up, probably asleep, when it started to boot and reboot and reboot, but not the whole deep "BONGG" but a cut-off "Bong...Bong...". It kept repeating until I shut it down with the power button. I managed twice to get it in Target Mode, but it froze up, after a while, both times. I once got it to boot almost all the way (got the desktop picture), then it froze. Another time, I got almost all the way, then Kernel Panic, turn off and on again, and the amputated short "Bong"-cycle again. gave up on it, tried again today, with a PRAM reset (maybe I let go too early?), a Verbose (no response) and a "SHIFT", which gave me a progress bar, that came maybe 1/10 of the way (about 1 centimetre was gray) and then Kernel Panic again.

Just before this, possibly after the Parameter RAM reset, I got a "normal" boot, all the way to desktop, clock and date, and the startup window of Firefox (I had a full Finder window opened before FF laid itself over), and everything was there, and then, the Iron Curtain came down: Another Kernel Panic.

I figure the most sensible thing is to rip it open and yank out the HD and pull off the files I want, then reassemble it and see what can be done.
Is the fact that it lives out the winter, shut off, in a cold, unheated cabin a problem? I never turn it on until it’s liveable there, when it’s no longer freezing outside (Thus it "freezes" from late October to late April). But it has worked flawlessly until now. It has been living like this for maybe five years.
What do you think? Is it toast? Is the HD failing? Mind you, I’m not at all handy with a soldering iron. Not at all.

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: Random shutdown, overheating GPU or CPU suspected

I bought this iMac used and it works ok for a while, but at some point sometimes 30 minutes of use sometimes a few hours, it randomly shuts down.

At first I suspected a bad HDD and replaced with an SSD and replaced the RAM. I'm using a fresh OSX install 10.10 or 10.11 ... whatever this one maxes on.

When the system shutsdown the back of the case is quite warm to the touch. I thought of replacing the Power supply for this system, but they're difficult to find and I don't like replacing electronics that could kill me (I'm not a whiz with discharing caps and the like).

I hate taking this system apart, replacing the SSD in it took 2 hours, but I'm suspecting the thermal paste on the GPU or CPU are the culprit. Any thoughts?

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: HELP My 2008 iMac CPU Fan runs at full speed.

My 2008 iMac CPU fan runs at full speed. I tried to control the speed via Mac Fan Control app but no luck, I can control the other fans perfectly.

Short context:

The iMac belonged to my father, he had it in his company, I was a little young, I remember that they had to take the Mac to technical service because it was getting hot and since they repaired it and returned it to my father the fans were always going fast.

Now that I am older, 2 years ago I decided to replace the GPU to bring back to life the iMac because the screen had so many lines. While I assembly the iMac I remember and noticed a connection between two solder points on the CPU fan connector.

I have a suspicion that this is the reason why the CPU fan is running like this, I don't have a picture but I will leave an image recreating what I saw when I put the iMac together, it would be helpful if someone can confirm if this is the case.

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: Slow resurrection, but still can't get diagnostic LED #4 to light up.

Buckle up, this is a ride.

I was given an old Mid 2007 iMac 20". The previous owner had used it daily until about six months ago when, according to her, it just died. It was working the night before and the following morning it wouldn't turn on. She bought a new machine and asked me to recover her data from this one, which I did. She said I could do whatever I wanted with the old machine. Since I had a number of spare parts available I decided to see if I could resurrect it in my spare time. This has now become a mild obsession. :-/

At first I got diagnostic LED #1 and that was it. No other signs of life even with everything disconnected. So I replaced the logic board with a known-good board.

Then LEDs #1 and #2 lit up and gave me a startup chime, but no LED #3 or any other activity. Bad GPU, seen it before. Okay, no problem, I have a known-good video card I could put in.

That gave me LEDs #1, #2, and #3 as well as the startup chime, but no LED #4 and no backlight or image on the LCD. Bad LCD panel? Strange that all of this would die at the same time but okay. I borrowed a known-good LCD panel from a friend and swapped it in, but LED #4 resolutely would not turn on and I continued to get no backlight or image on the LCD.

I asked my friend to test my "bad" LCD panel on his system and he says it works perfectly, if not a little on the dim side (common for this machine).

I tested the internal video cables from both monitors with a multimeter (which took an insane amount of time) and they're both fine.

I get no video through the mini DVI port, with or without the internal display connected. The monitor I have it attached to stays asleep so there's no signal going to the external display at all.

The power supply's output is within spec for the machine. I also replaced it with a known-good supply and that didn't solve anything.

The CMOS battery is brand new.

I am able to zap the PRAM on startup but that doesn't solve anything.

I know this is just a 17 year old iMac and not worth anything and if I had any common sense I'd just scrap it altogether. But I hate unsolved riddles and this one's really bugging me. It feels like I'm overlooking something simple but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is.

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210: Replace DVD with SSD in iMac A1224 Early 2008

iMac A1224. Early 2008

I am trying to replace the DVD with an SSD

The enclosures on sale have the wrong connector to connect with the iMac lead in the machine

I think the SSD enclosure I bought has an SSD fitting on the front edge. I think I need an enclosure with a different type of fitting on the outside to connect with the internal lead. Could this be an ATA or a PATA (I'm not sure.

Has anyone had the same problem and overcome it please?
