Hi,

I have a late 2006 iMac (17" Intel, 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo). It has a Matshita UJ-846 combo drive which has been confirmed dead and requires replacement. I believe that's a Panasonic drive (not a Pioneer). Ifixit.com has 2:

12.7 mm PATA 8x SuperDrive (UJ-85J)

12.7 mm PATA 8x SuperDrive (UJ-875)

What is the difference between the two and which one should I buy? They are both the same price, but one of them is out of stock. Please let me know if any further information regarding my computer model is required in order to appropriately answer this question. Thanks in advance!

iMac Intel 17": suspected faulty power supply on iMac intel 17". How do I diagnose?

I found an iMac intel 17" a1208 2.0ghz on the street yesterday.

Took it home, plugged it in, pressed power button and got no signs of life whatsoever. So I suspected the power supply.

I took it apart. Looks like nobody's tried to fix it so I may be in luck that its a small problem. I read that there are 3 diagnostic lights on the board to indicate power/communication with board etc. only the first led is lit when plugged in. When I press the power button I get no response or other lights come on.

The power supply looks a little grimy compared to other components. Any help in indentifying the problem would be much appreciated. Thanks.

iMac Intel 17": light on, no sound, no video upon startup after hd-replacement

My iMac's hard drive had presumably died 2 weeks ago: screen froze, after manual restart iMac would only display folder with question mark; different tries to locate the hard drive failed.

os was tiger upgraded to leopard.

bought a new hard drive and followed instructions on ifixit for hard drive replacement. reassembled. no parts broke; a.f.a i could tell all connectors were put back together sufficiently.

upon firing up the iMac only the white light turned on but no startup chime or video on the screen. fan does apparently work too as i can feel a stream of cool air.

iMac stayed disconnected from power for 2 weeks approx before.

i tried connecting the power cord whilst pressing the power button simultaneously and start the iMac thereafter. (resetting smc according to a post on insanelymac.com) as a result the fan blew loudly and the light was gone. after unplugging the cord once more the initial symptom was there again.

suggestions for solution please! :0)

iMac Intel 17": my screen has got diagonal pixellated patterns

The screen on my iMac has stopped working and I do not get an Apple logo unless I start it up in safe mode.
iMac Intel 17": My iMac will not turn on?

Yesterday my power went out and when it came on my iMac would not turn on. I thought there may have been a power surge but my NAS and external drives powered up. I looked thru the suggestions in the answer section of ifixit. I held down the power button for about a minute. I also unplugged everything over night and tried holding down the power button in the morning and nothing. I'm wondering if the power supply needs to be replaced? If so I'm not sure what power supply to get. The last 4 digits of the serial number is GVUX.

iMac Intel 17": Max hard drive limit on an Early 2006 iMac

Greetings all,

I'm going to rebuild a relative's Early 2006 iMac, currently with a Core Duo processor.

First thing - upping the storage capability. I come from the Windows world (no offense) and older machines have a BIOS limit (like 8.4 GB for real old machines, 137 GB, etc), where the BIOS could only see a certain amount of drive space, but the OS would create 2 partitions.

I am aware that Mac doesn't have BIOS, but I've heard everything under the sun about the capacity that can be used, like 2 TB, 750 GB, then 2.2 TB, then really anything.

I was shooting for 3 TB - is that doable with this machine, or am I going to hit a HDD limit?

Also, side question somewhat related - the replacement processor (T7600) - is Socket M, correct?

Thanks!

iMac Intel 17": iMac not booting at all

Hi there !

I've got 3 iMac intel 17" (owned in 2007) and here is my problem on one of them.

Sometimes, it used to self shut down, without any apparent reason. Since 2 weeks now, impossible to turn it on ! No led flashing, not any sound...

I tried to change the supply cable with another iMac's one : Failed

I tried unplugging it, witing 10s, pressed the power button for 10 to reset everything, then plugged it back in, then waited again but still no life...

SO, I have 3 possible explainations :

The power supply is dead

The Logic Board is dead

Both are dead

I was hoping you to help me. Is there any way to see or to test those parts (i mean with steps because i never electronically tested such an iMac). Do someone know about similar/common problems on the same model ?

I hope it to be back to life soon with his 2 brothers perfectly working...

Thanks in advance !

EDIT : I've not been able to find any diagnostic LED. These apparently are not on every macs.

The mac booted once but self shut down after 15mn. So i think That the motherboard is stil ok.

Still waiting for help !
