iMac G5 17" Model A1144: vertical lines on my display

Hi All,

I have a couple of vertical lines on my display - the number of lines are growing slowly(6 at the moment)

I mirrored the display on my TV , no lines there.

Is it the display panel itself or could be the wire connects the logic board to the LCD?

Or something else?

Thanks.

Update

I did lot a research on the web, and figured there are lots of people who suffered from the same issue.

There are two possible solutions:

1. You buy LCD panel online and take it to a pc shop and pay for repair.

2. Make a lots of phonecalls to apple and if you pushy enough might get lucky and apple might fix it for you for 30-50$. They changed mine LCD. Said there was a factory defect on some of the LCDs for the G5s.

Give it a try! Good luck

iMac G5 17" Model A1144: How easy is this to open? Just want to clean dust out.

I have an iMac G5 iSight and I looked at the guide on replacing the hard drive (to see how to open it) and it seems somewhat difficult, with the EMI shielding and all. Has anyone here bricked their iMac by opening it up?

This computer is a few years old and I'd like to clean the dust out with a can of compressed air to make it run a little better. I've successfully opened and re-assembled an Xbox 360 in the past successfully without problems.

So what I'm asking is, is it worth the trouble?

iMac G5 17" Model A1144: Internal drive slow, externals work fine

Internal hard drive became super slow to startup, (over 5 minutes). Also any task took longer, (about 10 times longer.)

Zapped pram, rebuilt permissions, and repaired disk, no improvement.

Disk utility, and techTool both reported OK, but took forever to run the tests.

Replaced internal drive with new, same results.

Everything is fine when starting from a cloned system on any external drive. (firewire, usb, flash, all work fine.)

I now suspect the HD cable, HD controller, or power supplies.

Any idea what to check next?

iMac G5 17" Model A1144: Dead Hard Drive controller?

Hi there,

I have an iMac that one day booted up to the folder/question mark screen. I decided to try disk warrior which couldn't find the hard drive at all. Of course my first instinct was that the HD was dead so I decided to throw in a known good Hd that I had lying around. Turns out that that hd couldn't be found either. I could tell the Hd was getting power so I tried a known good sata data cable. Still nothing. Also I tried to put it in target disk mode but the fans just started blasting and the screen would stay black. I'm assuming that's what happens when there isn't a disk to be targeted.

Other things I tried was starting from a leopard dvd and using disk utility. No disk appears! An external usb drive showed up though after I plugged it in. I proceeded to try to install leopard to the external drive but it failed part way. Also I wasn't able to boot from the original disk after I pulled it from the machine and put it in an enclosure. It would not even show up as a startup disk! I started to suspect the logic board but a ran the ASD utility disc looped for 7 hours and the machine passed!

Could it be that just the connector for the SATA drive on the logic board is faulty? Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks,

Cory

iMac G5 17" Model A1144: Computer will not turn on

I have read about this and the info from Apple but when I go to the trouble shooting it describes looking for diagnostic LEDS. I don't believe that my model has these as my disassembly take the front off not the back as the pictures show.

iMac G5 17" Model A1144: no power all of a sudden, after replaced caps

My iMac had a checkerboard screen, AHT reported an error with the video ram. I replaced all the caps which changed nothing. I pulled the LB out and pulled the heat sink off the video chip, cleaned up all the excess thermal compound and started it up - everything was working perfectly, so I went to grab a cup of coffee (2-3Min), when I returned, there was no power. I didn't have the LB screwed in, it was just propped up in the case, also only had the video, inverter and power supply plugged into the LB. No fans, sound... There was no smell or movement of the parts and neither the video or the processor were hot.

The power supply is OK (12,5,3.3V) leaving the dc/dc - without the LB plugged in the HD will spin and I get the proper volts at the connector. But when I plug it into the LB and power on the #1 LED blinks and the power supply shuts down... I have reset the PMU. I suspect the caps, I checked all them a hundred times but I can't get an accurate reading on the caps because they are in series. I would hate to have to replace them again

Does anyone know why the trickle voltage would make it shut off? Any ideas where I should look first? Troubleshooting ideas?

iMac G5 17" Model A1144: Why will only certain SATA data cables work?

My customer brought in an iMac that had gone to another repair shop, had the drive replaced because the first one was supposedly defective. It worked for several weeks and then stopped booting. We have determined that the first drive is actually operational when we use one of our straight connector SATA data cables from stock. It will not work with the original Apple SATA data cable though - do drive is recognized at all. I was sure that I just needed a new data cable with the 90 degree bends similar to the Apple able, so I purchased one new at CompUSA and tried it out (up to 3GPS). Nothing. The exact same results as with the Apple original cable. Swap back to my straight cable, boots right up. Can there be a difference in the cables themselves? Everything I read say's no, but there sure is something going on there. I wish the straight cable would fit, but I have to use one with the 90 degree bends. :o(

iMac G5 17" Model A1144: Screen Black Out, otherwise perfect

Hi,

I have searched the forum for this issue, but can't seem to find a similar problem.

I have an iMac 17 iSight. No issues with vertical lines, dark areas or funny colours. The issue I have is that from time to time, well it's getting more frequent the screen will go black, the computer is still running and I can here volume increase noises and so on.

To counter this I attached a second monitor, which worked well, but now this is playing up and going black, I have checked it on another mac and its fine, the mini dvi is also fine.

I can gather that both screens are turning off at the same time, not separately. So the iMac is suddenly losing its ability to show the screen

Is this a graphics card issue, lose connection, something I can fix, I have reset PRAM, SCU and everything else I can think of.

This is not my main machine, it has Skype on as we'll as Office and hats it, so it's not being overworked.

Anyone had the same issue, as I said the screen is vibrant and clear....

The iMack bongs nicely, and the f14/f15 keys make the screen brighter and dimmer, but the screen stays black throughout the boot process. I do not have an external display to check to see if that works.
iMac G5 17" Model A1144: No chime, no startup, no screen but fans and power-LED is on

I have a nice iMac G5 (iSight) on my desk but it doesn't run...

The system does the following:

After pluging in the power-cord diagnostic LED 1 lights on.

After switching it on the following occurs:

NO (!!!) start-chime

Diagnostic LED 3 flashes very shortly (10ms)

Diagnostic LED 2 flashes very shortly after LED 3

the right fan runs normal

the Power-LED (which is see through the case) is on

the optical drive goes in begin state

the HD sprins up and goes in begin state

The system turns exactly after 1 minute all fans in full blow mode...

_______________

What did I have checked?

1. the main powersupply:

- 12V is OK and stable

- 3,3V is OK and stable

2. the other voltages are produced on a combo-board, with the inverter for teh TFT.

I measured the following voltages and they correspond to the printed voltages on the mainboard:

3,3V all

3,3V run

5V all

5V run

12V all

12V run

But there are two lines in the plug on position 1 and 8 (white and gray cables) there is no voltage and they are not GND!

Does anyone can say, what these two cables to have been supposed?

I have numbered the cables of the plug in this way:

_________________________

| 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 |

_________________________

| 08 | 09 | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13 | 14 |

_________________________

When you lay down the open iMac with the top towards you and take a look to the cables then the white and the gray cable should be at the left side...

Btw. I've just changed all the ELCOs on the mainboard with Low-ESR-Elcos, but it is the same problem with the iMac!!!

Best regards

iMac G5 17" Model A1144: Any advice on power button removal/power on issues?

Hey guys!

I'm working on reviving an iMac G5 17" Model A1144 and I've come across some roadblocks. The primary issue is that recently during normal use it randomly powered off a few times and then stopped being able to be powered on entirely. I know it's old, but I've seen Macs last well beyond this!

So far, I've replaced the power inlet, the power supply, the DC-DC board, and the logic board with no change in symptoms. None of the LED indicators have lit up throughout this entire process.

That means I've replaced all but two internal components that deal with powering up the iMac (I believe I took everything else into account, so correct me if I'm wrong).

Those two components are the DC cable (connecting the DC-DC board to the logic board) and the power button. I've purchased both of those components and am waiting for their arrival.

Does anyone have any advice for removing the power button switch board in this model iMac (I plan to test the new one before removing the old one, incase it's a destructive swap) or any other ideas on how to bring this iMac back with all the work I've put into it? Am I not seeing something obvious?

Thank you in advance, iFixit self-repair community!
