iMac G5 17" Model A1058: no power, bulging caps x6

hi gurus,

have just opened up my g5 1058

The short version of the story is that i've bought this as a dabble into the world of mac's. The story was won't power on...so I opened it up and found 6 definitely bulging caps. I've read this is common to these models and would like to have a go at replacing them, I've also read that you guys think this is a difficult repair job! So.. ? Have you any masterful hints and tips to remove them as the common thread is that it's difficult with these layered boards. Any help greatly appreciated.

also read a few articles about this on badcaps.net and one linked from previous questions which suggest "rippling"..now I'm not an engineer, I'm an ordinary citizen and I was lost after the first hyperbolic graph and accompanying abbreviations. My general understanding was that all? the caps will need replacing, and so will the PSU as this is the source of the "rippling". Am I on the right track here or am I confused?

iMac G5 17" Model A1058: Starts to boot - then black screen with cursor

This is my friends computer.

Originally (and suddenly) he couldn't get it to boot properly.

Got the "tone" and the white apple screen . . .

Then a blue screen . . .

Then black . . .

Then blue again . . .

Then back to black but can see the cursor

Sometimes he could get it to boot but after trying to do anything it would go all "funky"

Example:

File windows wouldn't navigate properly - any action like resizing or scrolling caused ghosts on the screen

The cursor has a little clear stripe running vertically through the middle of it . . .

There's also a something like a box of vertical black line dots flickering around the cursor many times

Also it would get the gray "need to restart computer" screen in 4 languages when ever trying to open a program or even sometimes without doing anything

* * *

After trying a bunch of stuff like running Disk Utility and Applejack I was able to stabilize it enough to where when opening with "Safe Boot" he could back up the files he needs to save . . .

I did a soft re-install of the operating system . . .

Still didn't boot properly unless in "Safe Boot" . . .

I've since done a clean install including wiping the hard drive . . .

Still doesn't boot properly without Safe Boot and the cursor is still messed up . . .

Does anybody have any ideas for me?

Update

I needed to boot from "Installation CD" for Disk Utilities as well as both the re-install and the clean install . . .

Still had and have the graphics problems

After the erase and clean install I'm sure it's some kind of hardware problem . . .

The only thing that really changed after all the things I did before is that once I can log in I don't get the gray screen telling me to restart

iMac G5 17" Model A1058: iMac shuts off at random

My 17inch iMac G5 will randomly power itself off.

At first i thought it was overheating, so i opened it up and cleaned all the fans and vents to make sure there was no excessive dust and that they all spun freely.

I put it back together, and i've noticed that sometimes i'll power it on and it'll shut itself off after 5 minutes, other times it'll allow me to capture a video from my camera, convert it, and then burn it to disk.

Sometimes it'll happy run for a few hours, or even a few days, other times it'll not last the aforementioned 5 minutes.

Because of the mass variance in uptime, i'm not convinced its a PSU problem. Because i was able to get it to work pretty hard with the video capture/encoding/burning, i'm not convinced its over heating. plus, after having laid eyes on the cooling components myself, and having given it a jolly good clean (not that it really needed it), i'm even more convinced its not an overheating issue.

I reset the PMU and PRAM after reading about it online, but it still occurs.

I'm at a loss, and not really willing to take it to someone to get charged an arm and a leg for an overly simplistic diagnosis of faulty power supply.

What say you?

iMac G5 17" Model A1058: iMac G5 17" model A1058 dead

This mac simply stopped dead, no previous symptoms whatsoever. Diagnostic LEDs indicated faulty logic board (#1 lit, #2/#3/#4 off). Replaced logic board with refurbished one, but with no effect (LEDs same as previously). So my question is - could the problem be the power supply? In others words, could LED#1 light even if there was insufficient power getting to the logic board? If this is the case, would it be worthwhile purchasing a used working power supply? (the refurb logic board wasn't too expensive, but I'm reluctant to spend much more on an old computer if there was no certainty I could get it working)

iMac G5 17" Model A1058: Broke capacitor legs while repairing logic board, can it be saved?

During removal of bad caps a few spots had a leg of the capicitor break off inside the motherboard. There is not enough leg to grab onto. I have even cut them flush to the motherboard with nail clippers in a botched attempt to clear them.

I am using a radioshack (RS) 30 watt soldering iron and a RS 45 watt de-soldering (DS) iron.

I opened the other holes of excess solder by holding the hot de-soldering iron on the backside of the motherboard and pushing a small safety pin through from the frontside. This method was difficult and required some time and force. This was not effective at freeing the broken legs.

What are my alternatives?

Is there a way to use these blocked holes as is?

I believe the equipment I have used is may be too low in wattage and made my work more difficult than necessary. Would a more powerful iron make it possible to clear the holes?

iMac G5 17" Model A1058: A couple of capacitor questions...

So I recently got a G5 iMac that suffers from the bad caps. Apple says they'll fix it for a cool $700... which I'm not interested in doing. If you refer to the pictures below, you'll see that only 1 cap on the board has gone bad thus far.

Currently, my symptoms are constantly running fans, and the inability to sleep. If I hit the sleep button, the machine instead switches off without any kind of warning- not a good thing. So I'm willing to bet that the cap on the board is related to the fans, and I guess that there's probably a bad capacitor in the power supply as well.

So, here's my questions:

1) Once one cap goes, how long is it before the other capacitors start dying? And is there any way to prolong their life?

2) Has anyone repaired the caps before? I've got a friend who's really good with a solder iron, so I might be able to twist his arm into helping me out. How difficult did you find it to replace them?

Thanks!

iMac G5 17" Model A1058: How to resolve diagnostic LED 3 not lit on A1058 iMac G5

I have moved the question here on the suggestion of the moderator:

I spent most of the day yesterday replacing the 25 1800 uF and 1000 uF capacitors on my mother's old A1058 iMac G5, trying to resurrect it. 6 of the capacitors had obviously bulging capacitors.

Before the replacement, LED 1 would light up, then LED 2 would briefly light and go out. Now LED 2 lights up solid, but LED 3 doesn't light up. I reset the SMU, still can't get LED 3 to light up. LED 3 is supposed to indicate that the screen and the CPU are in communication, if I recall.

I did manage to get a hold of an external display adapter and the iMac is perfectly happy connecting to it, that display works fine! In fact, I have confirmed the iMac G5 does now boot, it just can't seem to talk to the internal screen.

Any suggestions on what could be interfering in the communication between the iMac motherboard and the internal screen and how to test for it? I have been told the LCD displays DON'T generally fail. I imagine it could be the inverter, but don't know how I would test for that.

iMac G5 17" Model A1058: Can't open iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes: what do I do?

When I try to open iPhoto it says; The application iPhoto quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected -I have relaunched it and had reported it, but nothing has changed and it will not open. (Has every picture we have on there).

Then when I try iMovie it says; the same thing as iPhoto and we have done the same thing, but nothing.

Lastly, when I try to open iTunes it says; "The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version iTunes." And I can't do anything to fix it. Please, help!
