iMac G4 17" Model M9168LLA: Tried open firmware password reset shown here & doesn't work, ideas?

The answer here was under "How do I reset the open firmware password on my Mac?"

I think I've done exactly as the instructions said, but maybe I missed a step?

I have pulled the easy to access RAM from the base of the iMac and zapped the PRAM, but can't get past the lock and arrow icons. The Command-Option-PR PRAM set doesn't do anything - no chimes as is usual. Clicking the Option key thereafter just takes me back to the dreaded lock and arrow. I mistakenly set my startup to NetBoot and now can't get it back to restart from the hard drive... help! The CD drive isn't working correctly either so holding down the D key doesn't get me anywhere either.

I recently got myself an iMac G4, when I first plugged it in and pressed the power button, the DVD drive made a noise and the fan spun up, it spun until I turned it off since it didn’t even display any video. I tried reseting the PMU, reseating the RAM (and replacing the internal stick), I tried to boot it without the modem daughter board, I also installed a new PRAM battery, all to no changes.
iMac G4 17" Model M9168LLA: Can my 2003 iMac become my 2009 MacBook?

So, this might be a long shot but just something I've been thinking about lately.

I have this 2009 MacBook Pro that, besides for the broken display, works fine. I have it connected to my tv and use it as backup for my 2012 MacBook Pro.

So very recently a friend gave me his 2003 17" iMac G4. Latest version of its kind. But still very slow and running OSX.

I know it'll need an Intel processor in order to update.

Now i was thinking. What if it were possible to just take the 2009 motherboard/processor/whatever and replace it with the 2003's. Or am I daydreaming when I think of that?

Would like to know your opinions as I am a new girl too all of this.

Lots of love.

iMac G4 17" Model M9168LLA: Problems with my 2 iMac G4

Hello,

I have inherited seven iMac G4s, two of them 17 inches.

As I don't have much experience in computer repair, I would like your advice.

The first, when I plugged it in, there was only the ventilation as a sign of life, so I unplugged it and dismantled it.

I removed the two ram strips to see if that would change anything, then I removed the non-essential internal peripherals (hard disk, cd drive).

All my manipulations didn't change a thing, the result was the same as at the start, simply a black screen and ventilation...

For the second one, I did the same thing, but again, nothing changed.

The symptoms are: when I press the power button, the fan runs for about a second and then nothing after that.

Have a nice day!

iMac G4 17" Model M9168LLA: iMac G4 Stuck On Black Screen

I was given a 17’ iMac G4. I powered it on and played around on it. Then I shut it down and moved it to another room, and it has not powered back on correctly since.

When I press the power button, I hear the startup chime and hear the computer running, but the screen does nothing. I’ve ruled out screen damage because it boots to open firmware when I hold Command + Option + O + F. I have tried A PRAM reset, and I’ve tried pressing the PMU reset button on the bottom.

My question is, what could be wrong with it? How do I fix it? Why was it working one moment and then not doing anything the next?

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

My octogenarian parents’ ancient G4 with MacOS X Tiger 10.4.11 finally bit the dust.
iMac G4 17" Model M9168LLA: iMac Will Not Start Up Properly

My iMac had been working fine for years, but after deconstructing it to upgrade the full-size RAM stick, it will not boot up again. When I press the power button, nothing happens aside from a small clicking noise from within the computer.

I've already tried reverting back to the old RAM stick, but that didn't seem to change anything, which is a bit worrisome. I've also attempted a few of the go-to tricks, such as a PRAM reset and the 10-second power button hold.

When I took it apart again, I noticed that the internal wires coming from the power cable input slot were stripped of a bit of their protective coating, likely from getting pinched during the process of putting the computer back together. I'm not sure whether or not that makes a difference, but I suppose it's worth mentioning.

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
