iBook G4 12" 800 MHz-1.2 GHz: iBook G4 powers on, but goes to blank blue screen after Apple icon

Hello!

I've got an iBook 12" G4 1GHZ machine that chimes, goes into option mode fine, etc., but when I attempt to boot from the HD, CD, or external firewire drive, I get the Apple icon with progress wheel, and then it goes to a blank blue screen and nothing happens. I've gone so far as to put a known good hard drive with Tiger inside the machine, but still it stalls on the blank blue screen. I've run into many machines with this problem over time and would love to hear it's not simply a bad motherboard. I've tried PRAM/PMU resets, changing the DC-in, changing the RAM, and pretty much all the typical stuff.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. The memory isn't any unusual amount. The hard drives are definitely good. I think it's a logic board issue...it's just hard to give up on it, because it behaves perfectly in option mode, etc., and in the back of my mind it feels like there must be a way to fix it. I would say it's the hard drive's IDE cable, except that trying to boot from an external drive has exactly the same result.

iBook G4 12" 1.33 GHz: Boot lock after root password change

This is probably a question for RoaDKilL.

Customer changed his user and root passwords from installation DVD because he forgot his old one. Customer has been known to take a nip or two. Unit boots up to log in screen. When new password is entered nothing happens. It does not go on nor does it shake. Would not go to target mode nor boot from internal DVD. I dropped in a formatted brand new 320 drive. Boots to very slowly blinking folder with question mark. Screen seems dimmed. Will not see DVD internal or external drive. Tried external keyboard to no avail. Will not reset PRAM with internal or external keyboard commands. Removed additional RAM, no results. Made image of old drive and image will not open on another Mac with the new password. I can't think of anything else to do.

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Button makes electronic "click" sound when pressed

Here's a weird one -- I've got a 14" iBook G4 that makes a subtle electronic click sound when the button is pressed. It also makes this sound when the space to the LEFT of the button is pressed, like just pressing on the plastic of the topcase is triggering it as well. Very odd, I know. The sound almost sounds intentional, as if it's supposed to happen, and it's very subtle and high pitch, like two pieces of glass or metal lightly tapping. It's kind of pleasant, actually. It's definitely an electronic sound.

Anyway, I've had a few machines do this over the last couple years, and while it's not a huge horrible problem, it would be interesting to know what causes it. The machine has a fresh OS, so it's not a tweak to the button settings, etc.

iBook G4 14" 933 MHz-1.33 GHz: Possible to Swap Logic Boards?

If this question already exists for this model, let me know- it didn't appear for this model.

Is it possible to swap boards within the same model family? IE, can I upgrade a 933MHz to a 1.33GHz board?

EDIT: Here's a more detailed setup- I have a 14" iBook clocked at 1197MHz. I got it for free, as it appears that the previous owner spilled who knows what on the logic board. Everything else appears to be okay- it seems that only the memory circuit is fried. So, I think that the LCD, keyboard, power, etc. should work fine. I have the opportunity to get another 14" model for very cheap, and all I'd need is the logic board. If it is a slower (or faster) board, will it work with the parts I have from this iBook?

iBook G4 12" 800 MHz-1.2 GHz: Blank blue screen always appears after Apple icon

Hi! I often get iBook G4s that can go into the option menu and target mode, but when you select a volume to boot from, or let them boot to the hard drive, they go to a blank light blue screen and then stall. This happens immediately after the Apple icon screen. The Apple icon screen will disappear after a while, there will be a sort of a flash of a screen refresh, and then the laptop will sit on a blank blue screen, and that's it. I've tried all the typical stuff -- removed the RAM and Airport, done PRAM/PMU resets, swapped the hard drive, tried booting to an external drive, etc. It doesn't matter if you try to boot to the internal drive, external drive, or restore media.

I can only assume it's a logic board issue, because I've tried everything I can think of. There are a lot of machines like this, and it's frustrating to let them go, because they seem like they are close to working, and it feels like I'm missing something.

Any ideas?

I have tried the following:

changed inverter board

changed inverter cable, this cable was most likely the original problem. The insulation on a few wires was completely gone.

changed the LCD panel for one with a know working backlight.

iBook G4 14" 933 MHz-1.33 GHz: Battery does not fully charge

I have an iBook g4 14", with charging problems. I have tried 3 new batteries and all do the same. When I plug my computer in to the adapter the adapter light turns yellow and charges for about 6 min. then turns green. Each time another of the little lights on the battery usually turns green. The computer runs fine off power adapter. I take out the battery and replace it right away and adapter light turns yellow and will charge for another few minutes then turns green and stops charging. I can do this enough times to fully charge battery and use the computer until the battery runs down, and with no warning, shuts down. To recharge I need to repeat the process again. When charging the the yellow light comes on and the icon in the menu bar shows percent of charge but when green light comes on the "x" is in the icon and no percentage shows. I have used two different power adapters, both work fine on my ti book, but with the same out come on the iBook of needing to remove and replace the battery in compartment so it will charges a few minutes more.

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: will not start up from HD or CD

I am trying to repair this iBook and am not having any success. When the power button is pressed, the screen lights up, the Apple logo appears, and after a few seconds the universal "NO" sign appears and it goes no further. When I try to start with a CD, it spins, and it sounds like it is starting up. However, all I get is the Apple logo on the screen, and after a few seconds it just freezes with the Apple logo.

Here is what I have tried so far.....replaced the hard drive, replaced the logic board, replaced the AC Adapter, replaced the fan, replaced the memory, and bought new CDs for Panther OSX 10.3. I can get it to show target mode with another Mac, but it does not show a HD, just the CD. I have noticed the fan never starts up, but don't know if that is normal or not.
iBook G4 12" 800 MHz-1.2 GHz: iBook Freezes

Hi. Have an iBook that originally had Panther on a 30 GB drive. I upgraded to a 160 and Tiger, and for a while, it ran just fine. Then it started to freeze after running for 8-10 minutes, no response from the mouse, no movement on the screen. I hold the power key down to shut it off; if I start it right back up, it will get past the gray (apple) screen, you hear the disk start to read, then it hangs at the blue screen. If I wait a half hour or so, it boots up normally, then 8-10 minutes later, it starts the whole thing again.

I have read about the "shim" fixes, and loose chips, it does not appear to be the same thing. There's no apparent graphics problem, i.e., lines or blanking out. Applying pressure to the components has no effect.

BTW, I reinstalled the original 30 GB drive, have the same problem.

Does anyone know about the transfer pads on the heat sink? Do they go bad? This does look like an overheating situation, and the graphics chip is a strong candidate. It doesn't feel excessively hot on the outside, though.

Any ideas OTHER THAN the logic board? I'd like to try everything else first.

Thanks for any advice.
